About 6 months ago I purchased a Radeon LE (not VE), after reading in AnandTech that it was only a castrated Radeon 32 Mb DDR, and that with a bit of OC and some registry tweaks you could bring it back to Radeon level.
But my card only went from 143 to 158 MHz, (while at least enabling T&L in registry worked).
Then I have just purchased a Radeon 8500 OEM, and guess what? It cannot overclock by a SINGLE f**** megahertz. That's it. ATi makes very good stuff.

By learning the teachings of Zerthimon I have become stronger.

Overclocking isn't a guaranteed thing. The Radeon LE was an excellent overclocker, but you just had some bad luck. The Radeon 8500 OEM is known to be a bad overclocker.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

Of course it isn't guaranteed, I'm just angry it never works well for me. I remember my Duron 650 that wouldn't boot at 1.85V. My only succesful experience was with the Voodoo3 3000.
Maybe they ship the lemon parts in Montreal :)

I'm not shitting on ATi, just thinking in fact that not being able to overclock by even 1 MHz is quite funny!

You said you have the OEM R8500? OEMs aren't always the greatest for overclocking. I think you are just biased against Ati :/

SOMEONE doesn't like Ati...I actually think the company deserves a chance...Kind of like Intel vs AMD. Nvidia made the Geforce256 then Ati recovered with the Radeon and its offspring. I just think he should back off considering companies reputation and reliability aren't based on overclockability =/

I've had many a bad experience buying OEM. Vid Cards that dont OC well(like yours) are just one of the things that happens when you shop in the bargain basement. My retail version of the Radeon 8500 will make it to 290/290, and be rock stable. I can even push the thing to 305/295, but thats just the unstable high-end. I've heard things about the OEM 8500's that werent to appealing. Things like brittle and cheaply made PCB's, purposefully neutered GPU's, and of course the well-known underclocking of some of the OEM GPU's. It's not ATI that has the OCing problem. Tough luck man. 🙁

For the old LE, you probably needed better cooling. The 6ns memory is rated at 166MHz (DDR333), but could often go farther. If you still want to play with it, try bolting on a 50mm CPU fan (which barely fits the stock heatsink).

What's the frequency, Kenneth?
