HardOPC tested 3 video card for IQ in FarCry. Conclusion :

With the latest 1.1 patch for FarCry performance is extremely close between the BFG 5900XT OC and the Radeon 9600XT with the same in-game quality settings. There is only a 1FPS difference for the minimum FPS and only a 1.4FPS difference for the overall average, which is definitely not noticeable as you play the game. What is noticeable though is the image quality; apparently <b>the patch version 1.1 takes care of many issues, but adds some image quality degradation to GeForceFX cards while it doesn’t effect ATI Radeon cards</b>. If you want the best image quality for FarCry the 9600XT is better but the huge IQ gaps we saw in the demo are no longer evident. Talking in terms of FPS performance, both cards are similar at the “High” image quality settings where the framerate is smooth enough for gameplay. At the “Very High” settings performance was to slow for all three cards.

I tought that nVidia corrected some of these issue with the latest Detonator. I'm disapointed that we don't see more IQ comparison in today's GPU comparison.

I remember about a year ago, most reviews had some screenshot to compare IQ. That was great, because we could how games rendered on ATI/nVidia/etc... hardware. This is something I like to know.

Because if nVidia "default quality" is worst than ATI "low quality", then benchmarks don't give real numbers. I would like to see a benchmark of the different quality settings for both ATI and nVidia. This would interesting to analyse how each company "reduce quality" and how it affects overall performance.

LOL!

Wow this looks very familiar, hey I know, I saw it HERE;

<A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=391405#391405" target="_new">http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=391405#391405</A>

:tongue:

BTW, did you read the Pixel shader 3.0 article on the front page?

<A HREF="http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=de_en&url=http://www.3dcenter.de/artikel/2004/03-31_a.php" target="_new">http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=de_en&url=http://www.3dcenter.de/artikel/2004/03-31_a.php</A>

Funny how HardOCP and all the rest noticed this article about a week after it went up at the 3Dcenter (there's been two since then). They didn't even post the PS3.0 article despite it coming out before they posted their links. Obviously gathering old info.

As for the comparo you're looking for with IQ and settingd, the best recent one would be from [H];

<A HREF="http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTk5" target="_new">http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTk5</A>

They do a great job, and usually have. [H] still cares about IQ, and they will point out discrepancies, otherwise they will say that they are close enough.

for the GFFX series perhaps, which are the more relevant product to this discussion.. but from what i read , the improvements are not that much

for people with GF4Ti's and the newest drivers? GOD NO.. its the opposite. i have never seen such horrible filtering, ever sinse my TNT2. im NOT exaggerating. im not flaming nvidia, its really that bad. like i said in another thread, the mipmap transitions stand out so bad that its just .... 100% distracting, and very dissapointing. i have to use 44.03 or 45.25 Detonators to get half decent picture clarity.. and for that, newer games suffer in performance and stability (because the newer drivers have alot of bug fixes for the games i play)

its quite dissapointing that such a recent product line is not being supported. the GF4TI's are still used by many many people

and YES, it WOULD be nice if benchmark sites would compare numbers when the cards are actually producing similar results.

one card using bi-linear filtering, and the other tri-linear is not equal. nor is the AA methods used by the two competitors.. nvidia's AA barely touches vertical edges, meanwhile ati's does.. image quality is quite quite different, yet they directly compare them.

funny things is, even tho ati cards come out with higher quality, they often still get better performance.. you tell me which is the better design

No apology needed, I just find it funny that I read 3Dcentre alot and post here often, but it's only once [H] et al . finally get around to reading them that suddenly it appears on elitbastards and such.

I just found it funny that [H] was talking about the R42X article after the R9800vsFX5950 was alrady out, and now they are talking about the R9800vsFX5950 when the pixel shader 3.0 info is out. I expect the to noitce that around April 12th. :evil:

The problem is that 3dcenter is un German! It's hard to understand and "babel" translations are not very good!

I know but they still mention that even 1-2 weeks later. IT's a pain to read, but usually worth it. I wouldn't find it so funy if [H], et al. all waited for the english translations to come out (usually 1-3 weeks later), but they usually post the link to the germans site or the poorly translated google version (not that babel is much better).

I don't know, it's just a personal smiling point in my day whenever I see them post it.

Funny thing is I have posted a few THGGermany/France articles here, and then they get translated to english a couple of days later and get posted on the front page here, and then the sites link to the english site, despite Lars having some ground breaking news on the Germans side. I don't know, I just find it funny because I think the .net expands our ohrizons, but too many sites stay safe, english, and local until some other local site notices it, and then suddenly, 'Hey Look!'.

Oh well it's just me.

But glad you got it a second viewing because it's definitely a very detailed look at the AA/AF.

I don't know. THG has rarely broke the news, THG has been known more for the depth of it's reviews.

I think Tom's german, but I know Lars is. The thing is Lars' doesn't report on others' news, he makes his own.

So I'm not surprised. Tom's news section is simply a sidebar (and a true sidebar at that). It's just to make usre people stay informed, not break news or collect all the info from the rest of the net.

But I would like TOM's revisit is reviews once in a while. It would be great to see how THG interpret the IQ difference between ATI/nVidia. Because these days, I find good informations on other sites. Maybe THG wants to be more "braodband" with a lot of high-tech hardware reviews, but I miss their very detailed CPU/GPU reviews!
