I Recently purchased a Dell PC with an "ATI 9800 Pro" Video card. According to ATI the core clock and memory clock is supposed to be 380MHz/340MHz respectively. However, according to Powerstrip and Rage 3D my card is operating at 324MHz/290MHz. I know in the past with the 8500, ATI stated that there was a performance difference between the retail and OEM version of that product but, I swear I remember reading that ATI has stated that is not the case with the 9800 series product. Should I attempt to return this card to Dell? Is this normal or is Dell and/or ATI trying to pull a fast one?

That's normal for Dell cards. You can call Dell and ask them about it. Those are the speeds for a 9800 non-pro. It will still perform kick-ass, and you can overclock it, so don't be too pissed. Dell sucks, what did you expect?

Well if this card is actually a 9800 non-pro I would be cool with that had they not told me is was a Pro. Even Windows says in a 9800 Pro. It just reeks of fraud. I can over clock it but can't get the memory past 333Mhz without some serious visual artifacts :/

Most dells dont come with the 9800pro unless you specify it in the upgrade i think. they use the 9800tx most of the time which is like a 9800 non pro. If you specifically ordered a 9800 pro then Id contact them.

I thought most DELLs were sold using either the *SNORT cough cough* Intregrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 or at best a GeFroce 4 MX 440.

UFO_WARVIPER, for the most part you are right, however, looking at this . You have the option of Fx 5200 (yuck), 9800 and 9800 Pro (nice). Oh, and Don, ATI hasn't been playing tricks...Dell does make a 9800 card called the tx that is scaled down...most likely a nonpro card.

No matter where you go, there you are.

I get the notion that the head management att DELL are a bunch of Intelliots (unless they were obligated by contract 20 years ago to submit to intel). The P4's make SPECTACULAR high-end machines, but they leave the lowend with the crummy celerons. Why doesn't DELL give AMD's AXP's a chance for the lowend?

They had proposed once to AMD but lack of supply to demand was hindering. Simply put, since Dell sells the most for low-end markets, pre-made systems ready to surf and edit documents, they cannot get enough by AMD on time. AMD has ONE FAB to supply. It'd have to dedicate it straight up for Dell only to work.

Didn't AMD have a FAB both in Texas, and one in Germany called Dresden?

Well I'm pretty sure its not a tx since my invoice says 9800 PRO and windows also recognizes it as a 9800 PRO. I usually just build my own but this was a freebee through work via a stored value card.
I called tech support and got this person that could not understand nor could I make him under what the issue was (I guess it wasn't on his script hehe)So he gave me another numberto call. Maybe this will be a good article for THG..."How PC manufactures try sell you second hand compents" hehe... anyway will stop boring you all with my issues... and "Dude don't get a Dell!"

It's more a case of Dell pulling a fast one then ATI, as ATI are just focusing on selling chips and wouldn't go out of their way to underclock a GPU.

yep

but, if you were lead to believe that iwas a real 9800pro, then call them to "rectify" the situation. use a long pointy object if nessessary

Heheh, the Dresden fab is named so because it's in Dresden, Germany!

The Texas FAB used to be for Durons, now it is for Flash memory.
