Well the competition will be good but for how long it took it should be faster than that IMO. Plus when it comes out it'll probably be $600US and why not buy a GTX for a little over $400US when it's so close.

Better features?

This is good though the competition is needed.

Everything that I am reading says that the fastest model will be near impossible to get. THAT SUX! The other thing that im curious about is how they expect the damn thing to fit in some cases. The 7800 GTX almost hit the HD cage in my SHARK so if its any longer then im screwed. HMMM, something about that last sentence may attract Wingding

could this be just a near miss for ATI in taking the lead overall(the higher speced card will just be for reviewers with not many at all for the consumer market?

The ati 32 pipes performs poorly compared to a 24 pipe r520 hmmm somthing strange there and the difference in clock is not much?

I wouldn't say that it's much longer if any, they both seem to be about the same length. Significantly longer than the X800/850 series but similar, from what I've seen, to the 7800 series.

- You need a licence to buy a gun, but they'll sell anyone a stamp <i>(or internët account)</i> ! - <A HREF="http://www.redgreen.com/" target="_new"><font color=green>RED </font color=green> <font color=red> GREEN</font color=red></A> GA to SK

I can't believe they're still crippling the mid-range with 128-bit memory. How long are they going to continue that stupidity? Something that fast with 12 pipes is bound to be severly memory limited with half the bandwidth, even with the fast stuff they've got now.

Definitely doesn't fit my desire of a nice 'efficient' architecture.

X1800XT is the same length as the 7800GTX, no worries.

There was a significant clock difference (32pp/520 vs. 24pp/650), but since the vertex shaders will be running at the lower speed (yet all can be enabled at 650MHz), performance will suffer at 520MHz.

You can't have a midrange card with a 256bit bus, its way too pad limited, even the x800XL is pad limited so they had to make the die bigger.

ATi R520 Slated For Oct 5th Launch

Many AIB partners have received the ATi Radeon X1800XL (R520XL) card samples last Friday and the die size seems to be larger than the R520 sample we received previously. The die size is enlarged from 18.2cm x 19cm to 19.3cm x 19cm so ATi has re-taped the core and added some features unknown to us at this point of time. ATi will be unveiling R520 officially on October 5th but we do not expect mass production of the cards till end of Oct. So far we heard only 1K of such cards produced for customers qualifications and reviews. Yield rate for 16ps and 24ps R520 is under 25%.
