ATI Radeon™ HD 4250 Graphics versus GeForce 8800 GTX Graphics

I'm running a Biostar 880g+ motherboard, AMD Phenom II Black Edition multi core (just using two atm opposed to the possible 4), 8gb Corsair 1333. Mainboard has an ATI 4250HD graphics onboard, seems to run pretty nicely with everything so far. But i also have a Geforce 8800 GTX sitting here waiting for a bigger power supply.

dxdiag is showing 700mb memory on video with just the onboard and it runs at core clock of 400Mhz i believe.

The 8800GTX has 768Mb on it with a core clock of 575.


I'm wondering how much better the GeForce is versus what the onboard is. Should i buy this 8800GTX from a friend for 80 bucks and up my power supply or just use what i've got?

I play Everquest/EverquestII, Counterstrike, Left for Dead, Half Life 2 ...plan on gettin CoD MW3 soon and some of the other newer high GPU demand games.

8800 GTX is a much better option for games over onboard video of 4250HD

Processor is capable of unlocking 2 more cores to go from 2 to 4

the 8800gtx stomps all over any integrated graphics. its probably not worth $80, since you can go buy a brand new, lower power consumption card like the gts450 or ATI 5750 and get slightly better performance for the same price. If you want something better than the 8800, go for an AMD 5770/6770 or better or Nvidia gts450/550 or better. those cards should be around $100. The 5770 or 6770 is probably the better option.

the 8800 isn't on this list because it's slower than everything else.... do your homework and you could end up with something good.......... then you can worry about the dual core processor slowing you down

it's old, it's hot, it guzzles electricity and the newer ones are faster, quieter, and better performers.

true, but it'll run everything i play at 55+FPS.....and it's only 40 bucks....i'll use it for a few months til the prices drop on the ones in the 7-8 tiers above it. 12 tier upgrade from what i was running, again...for $40, good deal imo.

Sounds to me like your friend is trying to upgrade through you.

Newegg will show you a lot of better cards than the now ancient 8800 series for $80 and less.

If you are jumping to a 700+W power supply, you are only limited by case space and/or your wallet. 8)

A 4250 is very low end for this day, so any currently SOLD 256-bit architecture card will be noticeably faster.

Just looked at the chart, my HD 5850 is top 5 tiers after at least 18-24 months? Shocked!
I haven't looked at cards in a while, I see the model # confusion game went even more nuts.

The 8800 gtx sounds like a good deal, however, you should wait until black Friday to see how prices will do.

I would recommend it too. Wait for Black Friday.
Since it could allow you to get a brand new VGA with warranty, for almost same price (old 80 dollars), faster, DX11 allowed, cooler, less consumption.

Yeah reading through here I agree with everyone. The 8800GTX was king in its day, but its day was over about 3 years ago. This card came out in November of 2006, and it literally wiped the floor with everything else, but it was power hungry, and ran hot.
I wouldn't pay $25 for it. Its simply that bad of a value compared in every way to what you can buy new. If your friend was a real friend, he would simply give this old tired behemoth to you to play with for bit while you saved your money for something better.
