Hello,

I have the same problem but I have an ASUS A8R-MX motherboard, which goes into the PCI-E x 16 slot. I have installed a new PSU (Consair 600W) to ensure that enough power gets to the card. I go into the BIOS to disable the on-board graphics display, save the BIOS settings and shut the computer off. I install the new graphic card and turn on the computer and the result is that the card fan is on, but nothing on the monitor. Any advice would be appreciated.

Solution
If the card is PCIe version 2.1 then there have been many reported issues with no display in older boards. Cards version 2.0 have worked without problems.

Thanks rolli59,

I've been doing some research on the web about the "many" problems users are having with installing a PCIe 2.1 in older motherboards.

FYI - here is the video card link: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161334

I'm going to try to review the various Bios options to see if there is any way to enable the card to connect to the monitor. Any other suggestions wqould be appreciated, especially those members who have gone through this type of upgrade.

Hi Rolli59,

I've researched this problem and determined that a new BIOs update is needed for this motherboard, which is not available since it is obsolete.

I've completed a RMA for a full refund (less $13,50 restocking fee) and have sent back the video card back to Newegg. FYI - this resulted in an additional cost of $20 for shipping. I've chalked this up to my cost of learning about how long technology lasts in the computer industry (around 3 years).

For those that have a similar problem, I've provided the best weblink from the ATI forum that best describes this incompatability issue. There were various troubleshooting techniques that these users had tried to fix this.

As long as the motherboard manufacturer supports PCIe 2.1 via an BIOs update, there should be no problem.

Finally, is it worth to buy a video card for this motherboard so that the CPU (i.e. Athlon 64 3700+) doesn't get bottlenecked? I'm thinking about basic Nvidia GT240 or the ATI 4650. Both use PCIe 2.0.

I have an asus A8N-SLI premium and an asus hd 5670 1gb, it works fine with my board and it is a 939 socket. 600w is much, i have a 430w, my gpu doesnt need a 6pin cable, it gets his power from the board.

Hi iam2thecrowe,

I did plug the monitor into the 5670 video card output and disconnected and disabled the the onboard graphic chip (via bios).. My monitor "Acer H213" has HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs. I tried them all and they didn't work with the 5670 card, which caused me to reset the CMOs a few times as part of my troubleshooting.

thanks barrymobiel,

I'll have returned the 5670 card and will consider rolli59 suggestion for a PCI-E 2.0 card. I know that the power supply is overkill but I can reuse this power supply for a future build (perhaps sooner than later... :sarcastic: ).

I think there are PCI-E 2.0 5670. The 5670 should be your budget choice, because it's better than your other option the GT 240 DDR5 version.

Edit: roli, I didn't see your post :)
