ATI seems to avoid getting the sharp-end of user's tongues on the lackluster driver support - the XP fiasco is certainly one I'll not forget. I installed a completely clean RTM version of Windows XP Pro on to my Athlon 850 - Abit KA7-100 running with a Radeon 7200 32MB SDR - the standard drivers were OK for regular windows things like Word, Excel etc ... but as soon as I fired up anything that used Direct-X (i.e. a game) the system would lock-up or perform a hardware reset a few minutes into the game! I had obtained the latest drivers and Bios upgrades for all the otehr components and found the latest ATI ones and added them - much to the detriment of my system whih was now totally trashed and would not even boot 🙁
ATI support info is apalling - I ended up doing several complete loops on their Q&A to determine that the problem was nowhere to be found on their virtually useless site.. they don't even have XP as an OS yet!! But their drivers exist - doh!
Nice idea having that problem report system - but how the heck am I supposed to use it if the system I'm to report on won't even boot now that the ATI driver update trashed it! I finally repaired the drive in another XP system and returned it to safe mode - closed down, yanked out the Radeon and put in a Geforce 2 STS. Incredible - everything works just fine now!!!
