I'm interested in aspects outside of raw performance.
Money isn't an issue for my upgrading needs, but heat and power and noise were. So the R9600Pro was the best choice to add to a recently built computer.
My upgrade in the Spring (or winter of '04 depending on their arrival) will be to an ATI (or nV [or someone else] if ATI really drops the ball) PCI-EX card with an AGP adapter. Then the next thing to get will be a new Mobo that supports the 939 socket AMD64(FX if that's still the opteron knock off). The reason I will be replacing the R9600Pro is not because it's lacking persay (no more so than any other card currently availible), but these new cards may give me the opportunity to set up a bunch of cards in an array. I don't just want dual monitor I want to be able to keep my current cards, and move them down the PCI-EX line to the 1X or 4X slots and still use them for multi-monitor support. This is my 3rd video card upgrade since the spring of '02, so I'm not you average card buyer, and also I'm not so because I don't need the VERY fastest to increase my bungholio marks. I just want the one that best suits my needs and desires, and I have a feeling that these next gen. cards will come pretty close. But we won't know for sure until we actually see them under a few reviewers benches/stress tests.
The thing to remember is that NO ONE knows what the future of gaming will bring you can only 'future-proof' yourself so much. We've even starting saying 'future-preparing' or 'future-looking' because there is no card that will last too long. You will notice a jump in performance an quality in game like Halo and above (maybe not in the older games because they likely aren't truely stressing your GF2 too much. But you will learn to enjoy things like AA/AF and higher res. until the games start bringing you back down to earth, where your GF2 wouldn't hold up at all. Also you will get newer features, check the screenies in the link I sent soccerdude about PS 1.1/1.4/2.0 in this thread;

IF you are buying for FUTURE games. Then wait if you can. IF you want your current games to play BETTER, then get the R9600XT. That's what I do, I get what I need for now, and then move on. The R9600PRo is what I need for now (not the R9700/R9800), and when the newer cards come out, I am focusing more of my attention on the RV380 than the R420/423 because it will likely fit my (for the next year or so) needs and then when the replacement is availible (R450 [usin 0.11 fab] or the R500) then I'll move to that.
I'm not as bad as the people who upgraded from an R9800PRO to an R9800XT or FX5900 to FX5950, but I likely don't reflect the same buying strategy/needs as you, so don't take my decision as a guide. Unless you want to take my personal GOOD experience with my R9600Pro as another vote for the advice you are getting in your own thread (the reason I didn't add anything is because crash and the rest covered it very well).
But like a few of us here say (many times); "Dont buy for the future, buy for your needs right now with an eye towards the future. Stressing the needs right now. IF the games you play right now don't play well enough for your tastes upgrade, and then be aware of what the future has to bring. But don't buy a card now in anticipation of future games that aren't even close to being here. If you are thinking of HL2 and D]|[ then wait until they come out, cause these cards won't get more expensive with time, just cheaper, and perhaps by the time the games come out ATI and nV will be releasing their next wave of cards and the R9600PRO/XT will be very cheap, cause people like me will be moving to those cards."
Anywhoo, hope that enlightens you somewhat.
