Hi!
Has anyone had issues with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 concerning heat? i've read around and seen that this pumps out a fair amount but coupled with an Artic 7 cooler setup.. would this be fine? Also has anybody had driver issues using the 4870 on Vista 64bit?
Thank you, Jet.

The cards due run warm with stock cooling, but I had no problems with two in crossfire. They ran in the mid 60c range, I've replaced the stock cooling on my cards with waterblocks and cut that in half. I think any aftermarket cooler made for these cards would be a help.

As for drivers I'm using CAT8.9 with Vista 64 and haven't had any problems.

The stock fan speed is adjusted automatically to run as low as possible, which, unfortunately, keeps the heat as high as the card will go without blowing up. You can adjust the fan speed manually though, and its pretty simple. I leave it at 35% and its fairly quiet, and the card stays cool enough for my liking.

I know it's been a long time since this has been posted but I thought I'd add something for people who might be going through problems with thier 4870 like I have been. Not sure what the problem is but I have been having problems with my drivers on a 64 bit vista system, also the card seems to be running way hotter than I'd like nearing 60 c under load with AOC. But the big problem I have been having is Lockups during gameplay, causing startup failures and all around general headaches with my new build. After reading through forums after forums I narrowed the cause down to either Overheating or Anti Virus problems. So to test this I played my games without AVG 8.5 and set the Fan speed to around 55% no problems for 2 days worth of playing and then as soon as I reinstalled AVG I got a lockup while playing. Now I am not sure if this is in fact the case but so far uninstalling AVG 8.5 (Tried to add AOC to my prefered list but couldnt figure it out) seems to be working thus far.

The Other reason I figured it was not in fact a problem with my 4870 is because the same thing happens with my 8600 backup card. So once again this is not coming from a guy who knows everything about comps, just a newb who's been having a hell of a time getting my new rig to work and wanted to share any info I had for people who might be having this issue. AVG was the last thing I thought would be giving me grief. Hope it helps.
