Ive got a problem with my acer aspire laptop. It gets BSOD(atikmpag.sys) (bugcheck shows 116 or 117) everytime it tries to load into windows. However, if i disable the graphics card or switch to safe mode, my laptop loads to windows and everything is fine except the vga display of course.

So what's the problem in my laptop? The drivers or the hardware? What causes it? How do i repair it? Local acer service center recommended that i buy a new motherboard??? Hence, a new laptop?

Other things. I was able to shutdown the laptop prior to the atikmpag errors. It was just that when i turned it on, a week ago, it then began to have the BSOD. Last thing i did before the errors was watch a video, surf the net, and play a flash game. And nothing is showing in the laptop LCD. I had to attach a monitor to see anything.

I already tried system restore, installing 13.1 drivers, 12.8 and switching back to manufacturer's drivers. All did not work.

Ive check the manuals but there seems to be nothing about changing the vga settings of the lcd screen. Usually, where are these settings changed?

After all this time, has there been no solution or stickied knowledge to this atikmpag bs?

I wonder if this will help. Been trying lots of stuff. Reverted back to original drivers for the ati card and uninstalled all windows updates in the past month.

In device manager IO, it shows TWO PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge
and underneath each one is a vga save.

1. First vga save is 000003B0-000003BB
When you click properties then resources it shows

Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:

Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:
PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Memory Range 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by:

2. Second vga save is 000003C0-000003DF

Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:

Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:

The ati card is diabled at this time
