From the very beginning, ATI decided to name the re-spin of the chip based on its performance. So it didn't feel it could call it the Radeon 9900 PRO if it wasn't acting as one.

thats what i like to see. they COULd have named it the radeon 9900pro or soemthing else, but instead they called it a more suiting name. i love how ATI listens to the community , because people were complianing about the misleading names of the 9000pro and 9100 and 9200

=)

ya!, the 9200 & 9100 performs slower than th 9000.
But if they could prove that the r360 can perform better than the r350 why not they just name it 9900.

ok!
what i'm really concerned is the naming for the next-generation R420 graphics chips. The name 10,000 sounds paranoid and too large.

Humm....

Interesting we can speculate...

I think they may call it :

Radeon 10K

Or they may find a new name for the next generation...
Rage
Radeon
RA???

10k is also good,
can either be Radeon 2, Radeon-X (as in Express)

I'd get a nVidia GeForce FX 5900Ultra... if THEY WOULD CHANGE THAT #()#@ HSF

So by this we can expect the RV360 to also be called the R9600XT. Seriously there was a gap that had no good filler (see my old post on this).

I don't mind, there was talk at one time of an R9800MAXX with dual VPUs, just in case the FX5900U clobbered it completely. So the TX isn't surprising.

I just hope this means tey xpect the RV380 to fill the gap and perform above the level of the R9800s,however that may be little too much to hope for.
It's interesting the statemen about the respin and it not bein believed to warrant the new numbers, especially since people are talking about a significant boost in performance (<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030822085942.html" target="_new">see X-bit Labs article</A>).

I still think the R9800FRO would have been sweet!

FYI, the R9100 is actually faster than the R9000 and R9000Pro in most cases. And the R9200 performs slower than the R9100 and R9000Pro.

maybe they're just following the way they did with 8500.
And it's still based on R3.xx, still a good brand name. XT.
