Atrocious ping in multiplayer games

I'm addicted to League of Legends, and I absolutely hate when even the slightest bit of lag comes up.

Used to play on Ethernet enjoying a flawless 12 ms to the server all the time. Due to some unfortunate events I'm stuck on using a wifi adapter for the time being and would love to continue getting my league fix in, but the lag I get is absolutely horrendous.

I'll sit at 30-50 ms (which is bad enough compared to what i had before) but every minute or so I hit 300 ms out of nowhere then go back down. You can imagine my frustration as many plays have been ruined by this, and its only been like this a day. I can't hit skill shots or dodge or predict anything with constant lag like this.

It also happens with overwatch, so I don't think its just a league thing. My only options for internet are either this adapter I'm using now or tethering with PDAnet but with the tether I get a constant 400 ms no matter what, so that's not an option.

Can this be my internet, the adapter or something else? I don't think it's other people on the network as I just finished a game which it happened and everyone is currently sleeping.

It can be down to the wi-fi adapter you have in your system yes.

There are a few factors as you know, so if the distance from your system and the router is not great it helps.
Plus also if the system and the router are on the same floor level, without to many walls between the both of them.

If you get regular and brief ping spikes.
By that I mean if the spiking is set regular set times apart where is reaches say 300Ms when playing LL.
Try lowering the transmission speed if you can of the wi-fi network settings being broadcast-ed by the router its self.

It will give a bit more overhead if the Wi-fi adapter in your system has Ping spikes at regular timed intervals MicroPizza.

The only other solution would be to go the Power line adapter route and using the electrical ring main of the house to get a wired Ethernet connection again to get a better Ping and less spiking. in Ms

Hi, I appreciate the response! My router is on the same floor as my computer with only a wall or two in the way (I'm not sure this is that big of an issue). There's probably only a distance of no more than 100 feet between where my setup is and the router.

I have xfinity and could not find transmission speed settings for my life, I do have another adapter of the same exact model which I will try later tonight to see if the issue still persists. Edit: yeah the same thing happens even with the other adapter.

I'd rather not go for the power line adapter as my setup for the time being is temporary, and I'd rather not drop the $70 for a half decent one for a temporary setup.

Here's what I've tried so far: changing wifi channels, playing when no one else is using the internet, updating drivers. No success.

I'd be very grateful for any other possible solutions, trying to avoid more purchases unless absolutely necessary (a bit tight on cash due to the holiday season at the time being).
