ATT Uverse gateway question

I've got ATT's U-verse for my internet & phone service using a ARRIS NVG510 they supplied. Wireless Speeds vary all over the place.
If I set the modem into bridge mode & connect to one of the new high speed (AC1750 or higher) wireless routers, will that give me better internet access speeds?
Will putting the modem in bridge mode interfere with my landline phone connection?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Solution
I ended up doing something similar - I turned off the wi-fi on the NVG box, just using it as a modem and (wired) router and added an external router configured as an AP.

Working great for me in that configuration.
Check your wired speeds first. If your hard wired speeds are the same as the wifi speeds then no, it won't make any difference.

And no, it shouldn't interfere with your voip phone service as long as you don't unplug the back feed.
