Attack of the Kernel Vol2

Yep. Its still bugging me!
Something is screwed in my win2k install and i just can exorcise its demons, even with a win2k reinstall.

Im beginning to think it may be related to the Service Pack 3... And all the blessed Group policy object warnings im getting in the event viewer.

TO cut a long story short my symptoms are:
A. excessive cpu usage by the kernel when doing certain tasks (virus scanning, searching for spyware running adaware)
B. Progressive system slowdown as the Kernel cpu usage increases and tasks start bogging down.
C. Disk activites/system activitys feel as if im running in PIO mode, however ive got full UDMA.
D. Reboots fix the problem temporarily, however within a few hours or gaming/chatting/browsing im back to where i started. Boggy and slow.
E. When the system is very boggy, even moving my optical mouse consumes CPU cycles... 0% on idle, fluctuating around a rediculous 40% kernel activity if i keep moving my optical mouse quickly!!!
F. Ive done WEEKS of problem solving and testing, and nothing seems to shift the bug.
G. Certain apps/games appear to make it get worse quicker:- Netbrowsing using I.E. (ive tried updating with no luck), UT2003 demo made it very bad very quickly (though this was the initial culprit).

*sigh*

Has anyone else had problems with SP3 compared to SP2? Im really clutching at straws here.

From memory the ONLY things that changed within a week before this problem appearing was
A. installed UT2003 demo (now gooone)
B. SP3.
C. APC UPS monitoring USB connection & taskbar icon.

If you have a second CPU try swapping it to see if the problem follows the CPU, then try the same thing with DRAM. Doing this won't affect any change in your BIOS or configuration, but it will rule out at least two concerns. Just an idea.

Have you tried changing your swap file to see if that fixes anything. I guess make sure it isn't to small or at least let the computer change it automatically.

The swapfilehasnt changed for ages.
Its still large 768-1024mb and fixed on the C:
Tonite i plan a win2k full repair.
If that doesnt work, then a reinstall followed by instillation of service pack 2, as opposed to service pack3.

Yes and no.
Take an application, O&O defrag for example.
Normally you would expect that to thake maybe 10-30% of cpu load total, with a portion of that Kernel usage (red line in the cpu load monitor part of the task manager)

Now with my bug the actual system process takes up 20 to 50% of the cpu load, and looking at the CPU load chart im seeing 100% cpu usage, of that at least 95% is kernel usage.

Hey poobaa, if you end up doing a clean install, slipstream SP2 so you don't have to worry about it afterwards. (Up to you though... )

Good luck, man!

ditto. Question: I found the instructions for slipstreaming Office, but can you do the same thing with Windows 2K/XP?

There are postings on the web on how to slipstream windows xp and SP1, and 2000 and its numerous packs.

Very good XP instructions <A HREF="http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?object=article.cfm&id=160" target="_new">http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?object=article.cfm&id=160</A>

Sketchy, but best 2K instructions I found <A HREF="http://www.eits.uga.edu/nt2000/slipstream.html" target="_new">http://www.eits.uga.edu/nt2000/slipstream.html</A>

I have a bunch of links on my site...I guess you guys didn't see that I included Windows XP and Office XP slipstream articles?

Anyways, I didn't have a Windows 2000 SP2 slipstream link in there, so I'll post the one that worked best here.

Man, you have to register. I'll bet they have a lot of members that have no posts, just so they can read thru the forums. Ah well. That's why we don't do that at our forums @ btvillarin.com, right poobaa?

Anyways, if you ever get a chance, can you email me that page as a single web file archive? Thanks man!

Well, this depends. Is this stuff straight from their site, or links to other sites? If it's the latter, then it shouldn't matter. The internet is shared territory. Plus, I'll be sure to link back to that thread, even though it isn't even viewable to guests.

Don't worry. I give credit where it's due.
