Yep. Its still bugging me!
Something is screwed in my win2k install and i just can exorcise its demons, even with a win2k reinstall.
Im beginning to think it may be related to the Service Pack 3... And all the blessed Group policy object warnings im getting in the event viewer.
TO cut a long story short my symptoms are:
A. excessive cpu usage by the kernel when doing certain tasks (virus scanning, searching for spyware running adaware)
B. Progressive system slowdown as the Kernel cpu usage increases and tasks start bogging down.
C. Disk activites/system activitys feel as if im running in PIO mode, however ive got full UDMA. 😡
D. Reboots fix the problem temporarily, however within a few hours or gaming/chatting/browsing im back to where i started. Boggy and slow.
E. When the system is very boggy, even moving my optical mouse consumes CPU cycles... 0% on idle, fluctuating around a rediculous 40% kernel activity if i keep moving my optical mouse quickly!!!
F. Ive done WEEKS of problem solving and testing, and nothing seems to shift the bug.
G. Certain apps/games appear to make it get worse quicker:- Netbrowsing using I.E. (ive tried updating with no luck), UT2003 demo made it very bad very quickly (though this was the initial culprit).
*sigh*
Has anyone else had problems with SP3 compared to SP2? Im really clutching at straws here.
From memory the ONLY things that changed within a week before this problem appearing was
A. installed UT2003 demo (now gooone)
B. SP3.
C. APC UPS monitoring USB connection & taskbar icon.
