Attempting Phenom 9750B Overclock

I say attempting because I am stumped!

I have recently upgraded (sort of) from oc'd 5000+ BE (3.2ghz) to a Phenom 9750B (max my board takes (sucks!)). Now my GPU is slower but quad apps are better so im clocking it to bring up my GPU score.

I attempted to increase the bus speed by 5mhz, to start with, and lowered the memory, HT speed to be on the safe side. Failed to POST.

Fair enough.

tried several other things and still could not get the thing to post. In the end I put all of the items in the BIOS on manual but at the stock speeds and it still wont POST!

Auto settings + Stock Speeds = Boots fine
Manual Settings + Stock Speeds = POST fail :fou:

What am I missing? Any thoughts?

Update... still nothing.

Tried AMD Overdrive, it was useless. It set my LOCKED multiplier to 0.5x so my 2.4Ghz CPU was going at 100Mhz. And that is all I could get out of that.

Also tried the gigabyte tool (ET6), managed to change the bus to 205 and done a quick bench but as soon as restarted it goes back to normal.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Managed to get the thing to 215mhz by increasing my ram voltage a tad (???) and is stable in windows (prime95) but still will not post 100% of the time so still no good.

I don't understand why it wont post all of the time if it is stable in windows. surely it should be the other way round; posting but not booting windows.

If anyone has had this before and found a way around it then PLEASE reply.
 
I think I've cracked it! It was the BIOS I was using. I installed the F6 BOIS cos thats the one for this CPU. It had something called "smart cmos" witch I think was screwing me over. The F7 BIOS got rid of this so I flashed to F7 and now it keeps the overclock!

I have noticed that it will sometimes double POST but still keep all the settings and boot fine, will have to look into that but so far all is well...

Thought I'd let you guys know.
 
Running stable at 2.8Ghz. Cant go any further because my mobo is at max wattage (125w). Idles at 27-30c and max i've seen it at is 52c (prime95). That's with a zalman CNPS 9700 at low speed.

Ive got the 9750 also, I am having trouble Oc'ing it all past 2414mhz. No matter what value I insert into my fsb, my frequency does not change. When I take the options off of auto for my multiplier/voltage settings, my minimum multi is 16, max is 24. Now the odd thing to me is that no matter what i change those settings to manually, I dont get a reflection in bios, windows, or cpu-z. My processor apparently has a locked multiplier of 12.. and thats really all the info I could find on google, but mine definetly is min 16, max 24. But When I check cpu-z the multi is always 12. My mobo is an asrock alivex fire esata 2.0. bios 2.50. Not sure what is causing me these issues, but I can only gain 14mhz, and that obviously isnt going to cut it. others who have overclocked this processor have just increased their fsb, whioch would be great.. but that will not work for me. Everytime I adjust settings out of stock, I have to hard restart the comp twice before getting video back. Anyone familiar with this motherboard and/or processor please give me some insight into these problems I am having.
 


depends, there are 2 models of 9750, the 9750 and 9750B. They are the same speed but the first is a 125W and the B only takes 95W. most AM2+ motherboards will only supply a max of 125W to the cpu so if you have the 9750 its already 125W and wont go any higher but the 9750B is only 95W so the motherboard has 30W extra power to use.

Another thing have you locked your PCIE Frequency to 100mhz (page 42 in mboard manual), if not do so and see if that works. This is from the mboard manual : -

This motherboard supports Untied Overclocking Technology, which means during
overclocking, FSB enjoys better margin due to fixed PCI / PCIE buses. Before you
enable Untied Overclocking function, please enter “Overclock Mode” option of BIOS
setup to set the selection from [Auto] to [Manual]. Then set the “PCIE Frequency
(MHz)” option from [100MHz] to [101MHz], [102MHz] or [104MHz]. Therefore, CPU
FSB is untied during overclocking, but PCI / PCIE buses are in the fixed mode so that FSB can operate under a more stable overclocking environment.

Somehow my very long reply got erased.. ugh. I have tried all different bios options that I can think of. No matter if my fsb is 205 - 260, my mhz stays at 2414-2413. Only at stock 200fsb will it revert back to 2.39 ghz, or 2400 mhz. "Multiplier/Voltage change" switching from auto to manual, the multiplier minimum is 16, and max is 24. Doesnt make much sense to me, also AOD does not work for me, neither on this phenom 9750 o my x2 4800+(2.935ghz). have tried the engine.dll fix but no luck. This is really urking me, since oc'ing the x2 4800, I saw large increases in peformance tests all around, and really like to boost my quadcore so it can at least try to keep up with the x2! Thanks
 
My model is the 125watt agena 9750, actually says 126 tdp on cpuz lol. I have seen, but been unable to get in contact with the varios confimed 9750 oc'ers i have browsed online. Most are only up to 2.8-2.9, which like I said is just fine with me ;')
 
It took me a while to get mine to go, I never found that much online about the 9750, most I seen were using the 9850 and 9950 black ed. Unfortunately its the most my board will take 🙁

Once I got my mboard to play nice it clocked easy, but in your case I would say that the motherboard cant supply enough power to overclock it, the TDP in cpuz for me was 97W so I had headroom for bigger clocks. Not alot you can do about it unless you can find a 9750B for sale but to be honest you'd be better off getting something newer.
