Audio and the motherboard?

Hey guys,

just got done building my first computer and everything is going perfect except I can't get audio.

I bought a Asus Z97-A motherboard and just plugged in some crappy speakers to test out the audio.

I get a red x next to the speaker that you can usually adjust volume with in the bottom right-hand corner
with a "no speakers or headphones are plugged in message"

Heres what my device manager and sound menus look like

You can see the speakers are recognized and set as the default and the speakers along with the realtek hd audio shows up in the device manager. Also, yes I do have to most up to date drivers for these.

I read that when you install a video card sometimes the audio from it will take over and it will disable the onboard audio which would explain the speakers not working. But I went to BIOS and sure enough the onboard is enabled.

I'm really just kind of stuck and I know there's probably a simple solution. This is the last thing before my computer is fully operational so its kind of frustrating lol.

Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.

Thank you for your time

But what does Windows think the default sound output device is? Your RealTek chip, or the GPU HDMI output?

Sorry that I'm a noob at this, but where would I go to check/change this? In BIOS?

My default device is set to my speakers in the sound menu like in the first picture.
