Audio crackling and cuts out briefly in games, just started happening today? Do I need to buy a sound card?

Just what the title says when I load up games like BF1 or Overwatch there's occasional crackling and cutting out no matter if I have it plugged into the rear connector or the front panel connector. I made sure it wasn't the headphones, but is actually the computer.

does the game lag or just the sound? try updating the drivers for gpu and onboard audio.
