Audio for notifications but nothing else?

Been having this issue with speakers plugged into my system. The problem occurs with both the front and rear audio jacks.

Audio plays for system notifications but not for anything else. Youtube, games and other system sounds are all silent.

Oddly enough, audio works perfectly when headphones are plugged in.

I've had this issue with multiple sets of speakers.

First right click your speaker icon (usually in lower right corner of your screen) and doublecheck playback devices. Could be just a setting error.
If no problems there then check the other menu items e.g. Volume Mixer. Then run the troubleshooter.

Second, you may need to open up your case and check that there are no internal audio connections that are either loose or disconnected. Reseat the sound card if you have one.

Thanks, let me see. I've checked out a lot of the speaker settings, but I have no idea what I might be missing if I am missing something. Also ran the troubleshooter and tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers.

I would imagine that everything inside the case is fine...Headphones work okay and the monitor speakers do give sound...but only in select situations, i.e. when a notification goes off. I don't know if I have a sound card or not, but I don't think I do. I can investigate.

Well, this wasn't the solution I was looking for and I have no idea what I'm doing but I got the audio to go through by routing it through the DVI/HDMI on the video card instead of trying to make it go through the 3.5mm jacks. I still don't know why the jacks are giving me so much trouble though.

Meaning you routed the sound card output to the video card....?

Was there some screen configuration that you used? What video card do you have?

The trouble was just finding the correct source to speaker pathways for audio and digital sound.

I'm not sure what you're asking.

I abandoned trying to set up a 3.5mm link between the speaker/monitor and the computer. One wire (DVI/HDMI) from the computer up to the speaker/monitor. Switched the audio output to go to the monitor instead of the 3.5mm jacks. Everything works although I don't know why the other setup didn't.
