Audio "not plugged in": Line in error (GigaByte)

I'm having trouble using the "Line in" jack on the Audio card.

On the device manager (Control Panel, sound) under the recording tab it keeps saying the "Line in High Definition Audio Device Not plugged in". And yet a cable is plugged in to the line in jack!

I have tried again after installing the RealTek audio drivers on the Gigabyte CD. No improvement. It now says "Line in RealTek High Definition Audio Not plugged in".

I'm wondering if it's a hardware fault. Are there any further tests I can make? Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

NOTES
1) The audio cable I am plugging into the "Line in" jack is fine --- I've tested it using other computers and it works well.
2) The blue jack has the "line in" symbol so I'm not mistaking jacks.
3) The "Line out" jack on the Audio card seems to work fine as it operates my 2-channel speakers just fine. In the Device Manage the speakers icon is ticked as it should be.
4) I am converting old cassette tapes to digital format for archiving. The technique worked fine on my old defunct computer! But not on my new computer.

Solution
can you try and go to control panel - realtek hd audio manager and make sure that playback is on and can you plug the device into line in. if all of this is fine click advanced settings and see what is there
Thanks for your reply. I'm just plugging into the coloured jacks at the back of the computer.

I guess they are on the motherboard but I don't know for sure. According to the motherboard manual, the motherboard has 6 coloured jacks. I'd attach a jpg but there doesn't seem to be an option to do so on this forum.

Thanks. Just tried downloading drivers from makers website. Didn't fix problem.

I also tried disabling the various sound devices and just enabling 1 at a time. Still doesn't fix the problem.
