Audio output when two cables attached to graphic card

Hi all, I'm new here so if something not right about my post please let me know.

I've been having this problem for a while now. Situation is like this: I have one LCD monitor and a TV connected to one graphic card. For the LCD, it's a HDMI to HDMI, for the TV, it's DVI to HDMI. I'm using a AMD R7 360 and windows 7. My card has only one HDMI cable so I have to use a DVI-HDMI cable.

The symptom is I just can't find the TV in the playback device list when my LCD is connected. It's simply not there so I can't turn on the TV's sound by making it the default. If I disconnect the LCD before I turn on my PC, I can see the TV in the list and therefore am able to switch my audio output. Interesting thing is if I plug my LCD back on at this moment, I can't see the LCD in playback device list. My theory is for some reason, two external audio outputs are not allowed at the same time; the card prioritise the HDMI output over DVI output; and finally when DVI output is activated, HDMI output is not. Is this possible or correct? The cables are functioning properly, so it's unlikely the hardware problem.

My application of this combo is I use LCD for work/gaming and TV for movies - because my speaker is next to my LCD so when I watch movie I need to switch to TV's own speaker.

I've updated the driver of my card and HD audio of my motherboard to the latest version.

Any thoughts are very welcome.

Thanks
James

Solution
Yes, that would be all you need, and if it should be simultaneous as well!

So all you have to do is connect the 3.5mm male to female splitter to the Green audio jack on the back of your computer, and plug your speakers into one of them and a cable similar to the one I linked into the other, and everything should be good to go!

Hope I helped!

Have a great day.

I believe that that is correct. Only 1 Audio output is allowed at the same time. If you are wanting both audio outputs then there are ways around it. As long as both your Monitor and TV have audio output connections, you could buy a 3.5mm cable splitter and plug both into there, and it should allow audio outputs to both devices.

Hope I helped.

Have a good day!

Hi xFeaRDom,

This is lightening speed response. Does that mean I no longer use my graphic card to output audio and use the audio chip on motherboard instead?

Thanks a lot

Yes, that would be the case.

Have you checked if your monitor and tv has the 3.5mm audio connection? If not, I am sure that there are other ways around it.

The other ways could be inexpensive or expensive, depends what you go with. Do you have a budget? (It shouldn't be too much)

Edit:
I am guessing that since the monitor has speakers, then it would have a 3.5mm Input, and I know basically all TVs have them too.

Let me know!

Analogue (motherboard audio) might be best way to go.

Solved him self: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/356550-33-select-audio-displays-7850 Not sure if that will help you, perhaps AMD software might have an option Windows playback doesn't offer. Post is referring to Cataylst but Crimson should have similar. Think the end result all he wanted was a way to switch between audio devices but not sure if he got it simultaneously coming from the same card.

Hi, I just checked the back panel of my TV - the only possible audio output ports seem to be this "component / AV in" with a horrible 5 jacks...It's a samsung TV btw, does this complicate the solution? Is there some sort of spliter can do this job? I had a look online, there is even this thing called "Samsung UE40D5520 LED TV Audio Video AV Component Adapter Cable" (link here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE40D5520-Audio-Component-Adapter/dp/B0072WDKKQ). Do I need it and will it be able to fit it on my PC? I think I have a standard 6 ports audio output on my motherboard (see picture below).

Its unusual for a TV to not have the 3.5mm Audio Jack.

But a cable like that would work. There are better ones than that, that provide purely audio (Only stereo)
Such as this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/NIKKAI-PHONO-3-5mm-STEREO-CABLE/dp/B005CMGXVG

And also, does your monitor have the 3.5mm audio jack? If so, then your solution is practically complete.

All you would need is a 3.5mm audio jack splitter, a 3.5mm audio cable and a cable similar to the linked one, and it should, output audio from both.

I see! Thanks for that and yes my speaker (which I have next to my monitor has a standard 3.5mm jack). So all I need is a 3.5mm male to female spillter like this one (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Jack-Splitter-S-Flex-Mini/dp/B00LGRVSF2/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1470062132&sr=1-6&keywords=3.5mm+audio+jack+splitter) and a cable in your reply!

It does mean the audio output will be simultaneous through the splitter if I understand it correctly? It's even better for me as I don't need to do the switch in playback device list.

Solution
Thanks Dom. Your solution is greatly appreciated!

No Worries.

I'm glad I could help.

Have a great day.

Hi Dom

Unfortunately the solution doesn't work for me yet. I got all the cables set up and there is still no sound coming out of the TV, whereas the speaker is doing fine (the other branch of the splitter).

Any ideas? My guess is the HDMI cable overrides the RCA cable. Is this possible? I can understand the thought behind this solution but it just doesn't seem to work. I looked through my TV settings, there's not much I can do there.

Please help!

Thanks
James
