I am currently working on my first ever pc build for use as a DAW. When it comes to tech-lingo, I may be borderline autistic. Currently my build as is:

  • Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz
    16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
    Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
    WD Caviar Black 1TB
    Fractal Design Define R4 Case

Included in my build right now is a Asus Z87-Pro LGA1150 MOBO. Basically what I'm wondering is; are there better motherboards for use in an audio workstation? I'm not planning on overclocking, to be honest I don't even know what that is. I may play games every-so-often, but it isn't that main focus of this machine.. By a long shot.

Also, in terms of PCI and PCIe. Should I worry about having enough connectivity for Firewire? Are there enough PCI slots on this motherboard for a Firewire card, sound card, and video card.. I'm not sure if I even need these things? I'm going to invest in an external audio interface for recording.. Would an internal sound card even be worth buying? Or is the onboard video and audio plenty? Should I look for a Mobo with more USB interfaces?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I'm sort of all over the place, lol.

Note: This build isn't actually ordered and built yet. I'm still researching which components would be the best. So any and all opinions are welcome.

Okay im here to help friend To get good sound fidelity motherboards wont come with you go with a sound card :3
Sound cards will plug into a pcie slot and will give you heaps of jacks to plug your headphones into. My sound card is about 40$ and poops on motherboard sound. IT comes with some software bundles. This is the best part. You have an equalizer software pack. So that you can change the frequency gain for a bunch of different frequencies to make the sound more attuned to the type of music you like. BASS BOOSTED :3

YOu probably dont need such a powerful processor unless you want to play games at ultra in 1080p with 60 fps. for you i recommend like a mid range i5 or something.

I won't be gaming all that often because I work a lot, and when I'm not at work I'll be recording. However, if I do decide to take a break, I may want to game a little bit.. Nothing serious, because I also have an Xbox One. For this, would I have to invest in a video card? Nothing serious, maybe a GTX 560 or something..

I would like the ability to do some small amount of gaming. Don't want to overdo the setup however..

hmmm yea i guess that would work waht sort of games are you going to play tho. Because if it is bf4 or something like that the 560 wont accomplish much. Its its an mmo or something like league of legends you will be fine.

Possibly Elder Scrolls Online when it comes out.. Nothing much.

Mainly I need a good graphics card for 1080p video editing.

560 wont be enough for eso (on another note you willing to pay subs :O im not id play it otherwise) 560 probably wont be enough for video editing either. need a 600 series for that unless your willing to go with amd gpu which will be a bit cheaper. something like a 270x will be fine for you.

Yup that good enough. did you pick a sound card out for yourself that you like or would you like me to recommend one?

Currently I have the Asus Xonar Essence STX 24-bit 192 KHz Sound Card picked out..

But here's the problem.. I want Firewire connectivity.. I'm not sure if I should go with a PCI, External USB, or Firewire card.. I'm not sure of the difference..

pci usb card will give you extra usb ports fire wire card will give you fire wire ports. Do you need fire wire not many things support fire wire the the moment.
