Hi, I’ve been asked to upgrade a Q6600 based machine as a CAD workstation for hobby user, no gaming. Budget up to £1000, excluding case, PSU, DVD, HDD, Windows.
Key questions:
- I’ve proposed an i7-7700k based build. Is this overkill / diminishing returns vs AMD or i5?
- Is there any real world value in a Quadro P600 card vs onboard graphics?
I don’t want to spend £200 for no real benefit. Would consider gaming card if appropriate as a future upgrade when prices stablise.
- Would be nice to include a large screen in the budget, suggestions welcome.
- Would like to avoid spending for diminishing returns, if £500 would do for hobby use that would be a good result.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Approximate Purchase Date: Feb / Mar
Budget Range: max £1000
System Usage from Most to Least Important: AutoCAD 2018, Revvit 2018, general browsing / documents. No gaming.
Are you buying a monitor: Yes, 27” if possible
Parts to Upgrade: CPU, RAM, MB, SSD, GPU?
Reusing Corsair CX 650W.
Do you need to buy OS: No
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Scan, Ebuyer, Amazon, Overclockers etc
Location: UK
Parts Preferences: No preference
Overclocking: No
SLI or Crossfire: N/A
Your Monitor Resolution: tbd - need advice as to whether proposed setup can support editing models at QHD, UHD.
Additional Comments: None
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: current system is too slow to manage current versions of modelling software.
