My desktop computer will shutdown almost immediately, and my monitor displays, "power save mode". I restart it, the same thing over and over- shutdown. I kept it on long enough to change the settings in the control panel to never shutdown, but it still does this. How can I troubleshoot this problem? Thanks.

Okay thanks.

The reason I asked that you don't select anything is because it rules out a hard drive problem or a Windows problem.

That leaves a few other things it could be.

During the POST (when you turn on the pc, it tests itself quickly) it passes the tests. This doesn't mean the system is fine though.

How old is the computer and do you know the system specs?

My guess is that it is a bad power supply or motherboard.

When it shuts down randomly, is it actually off? Can you hear the fans? If you cannot, I'd replace the power supply unit.

If the fans are still going, I'd replace the motherboard.

I would have to check the computer to see if it is in safe mode, I do not know. I am having trouble checking any of the settings because the computer shuts down almost immediately. Should I try to put the computer in safe mode? How do I do that exactly?

Upon booting up the computer this time, it said Startup repair was running to repair issues. When this finished, the computer restarted automatically. I shut it down myself thwen restarted, and pressed F8 multiple times, but could not get it to enter Safe mode. About 3 minutes later, it shut down again. I am not sure why F8 does not work as you describe.

Thank you for your help...As I said, I was able to select Safe mode with networking, but then the computer promptly shut down again. Starting it up again now, it is running Startup Repair. Again. I selected to restore settings. It said if the Startup Repair is successful, the computer would automatically restart- which it has done twice now, before promptly shutting down again. So it seems that it shuts down even in Safe mode.

I understand it shuts down in safe mode.

You should try NOT selecting anything at the boot menu. Just let it sit there with the list... don't make a choice.

Just move down to safe mode with networking, but do not press enter. Just let it sit there.

Does it reboot or shutdown, or does it just sit there...? Let it stay there for 10 minutes.

I got to the screen and was arrowing down to rest my cursor on safe mode with networking, and before I could even get to that point, it shut down. As it has again three more times. At this point, I need to go to work and try this process again tomorrow morning. It seems to stay on longer initially, so tomorrow I will try again.

I had an online support tech through the manufacturer that told me it may be video card drivers or settings, or power save settings, but he wanted to charge me $69.99 for the software support, so that was as far as I got with him. I suppose if the computer is running in safe mode, that will exclude the video card driver from running?
