Automatic Updates - SP2 Coming Soon

for those who don't know already, XP Service Pack 2 is coming soon...

go here to turn ON Windows Automatic Updates:
http://protect.microsoft.com/security/protect/WSA/en/default.asp

- press the [Start Here] button (accept software from microsoft if prompted)

- press [Turn on Automatic Updates] button

- done

starting next week, your systems will be automatically updated as Microsoft pushes SP2 out to their Windows Update servers

Actually, SP2 has been delayed. It appears that SP2 appears to break a few
programs.....

No, that isn't correct. SP2 was released to manufacturing on
August 6. As yet, it's only been made available to beta testers
and those with MSDN subscriptions but public downloads should be
available by August 16.

I'm running the released version on both machines here.

Will SP2 just include all the security patches issued to date plus change
around some of the defaults, or are there significant security reasons to
rush to install it?

I keep my machine updated will all the critical patches, so typically I
prefer to let something like SP2 bounce about in the real world a few weeks
before installing. This allows me to see if it breaks a bunch of machines or
not before committing to it. Is this still a good strategy with SP2 or are
there new critical fixes in it that haven't been released individually
already?

If i reinstall, will I need both SP1 _and_ SP2, or just SP2?
Also, how do I save SP2 to a CD ?

service packs are cumulative, so all updates from previous service packs are incorporated into the latest one, ie, SP2 contains all of the updates from SP1, although there may be some post-SP2 hotfixes available on the Windows Update site by the time you've installed SP2, so don't let that surprise you. simply turnON automatic updates, Windows will notify you in the coming days when SP2 is ready to install itself. in the interim, manually check for Windows Updates as you normally do.

you can download the full-cab (network admin's version) from the microsoft site, it's about 260MB, not required unless you plan to do a reinstall in the future, in which case you probably don't want to have your system directly exposed to the internet during a virgin install of XP. don't worry about the full-cab version right now, it will be on microsoft's download center forever... you can get it at any time in the future

your strategy seems fine to me... if you don't use automatic updates, then just keep manually checking the Windows Update site for critical updates and such. the old V4 update site will soon redirect you to the new V5 site from which a small update to the BITS service will be downloaded to your machine and you will be prompted to turn ON automatic updates... your choice. subsequent visits to the new windows update site should present you with service pack 2 as a critical update. should be available shortly.

How do I turn OFF "Automatic Updates?"
I don't want MS to download SP2. I plan to wait for the availability of the
FREE CD. I am satisfied with the operation of my computer and have never had
anything infectious, since I use several non-MS applications to prevent
these.

Go to CntrlPanel > System > AutoUpdates and uncheck the relevant box.
