Is there any other way to automate workers apart from using the a or shift
+ a commands? if so, how does it affect the worker behavior?

There's P (or is it shift-P?) for clearing pollution.

But unless you really really hate micro-managing things, automate workers is
NOT the way to go. IMO worker is the most important unit in the game...
automated worker AI is just not efficient, and most of the time, won't fit
into your big plans.

I see your point, but using shift + a works pretty well. A big downside
with this game is that a lot of units in a big empire will make the turns
too tedious and time consuming. That has a charm to a certain extent, but
in the long run too many workers and/or military units to manage tend to
get boring as the game progresses, especially on maps larger than the
standard size IMHO.

When during the mid-turn auto move sequence, jusy hold down the shift key
and it will temporarily disable animations. That should speed things up a
bit.

I usually create a LOT of workers as quickly as I can. My first one
is always allocated to the capital in a 'this city only' job. Then
when I build a new city, I build a worker as quickly as possible and
its task is to build a road to the capital. Then each city I build
builds a worker with a road to the next nearest city or to the
capital. When it reaches the other city, it is assigned, 'this city
only'. When I build extra workers they are assigned 'this city only'
until the city is complete. Then they are released to work
automatically. When I get railroads, I usually take all my workers
and send them to a city in one corner of my empire. Then I take them
in groups of ten and send them off making railroads to the various
corners of the empire. All other workers are set to automatic mode.

It would be nice if workers were given a 'Trade routes' option to
build roads and/or railroads between cities where they work until all
cities are connected by RR.

There is a "build trade network" option for workers. IIRC it is
ctrl-n and it connects roads between all cities and resources.

Interesting, I have seen that but never used it. I have it in the
advanced buttons. I think I used it once but it didn't do anything.
I may have already had roads to all cities or I may have expected it
to build routes to other civs. I never tried it again.
