Avast using 99% CPU on idle

4 GB DDR3
Asus H81M-k
Corsair VS 650

At times my CPU temps will suddenly spike and the usage will be 100% on all four cores. When I check in the resource monitor, the Avastsvc.exe seems to be the problem, using 99% of the CPU. Temps soar as high as mid 80s if I don't shut the PC down. And all this is when I am doing nothing else but browsing. Not running any scans, and otherwise when I update the virus definitions it's fine. It just happens for no apparent reason. Any ideas?

seems like Avast's scan is getting hung up on something - uninstall any competing antivirus/antispyware programs you may have, or try a different antivirus than Avast if it can't find anything substantive on its scans.
