avast vs kaspersky

Just recently, my Norton anti virus subscription expired. I was really not satisfied with norton since it was not detecting all of the threats on my computer. One time, my computer was infected with a nasty Trojan that downloaded a ton of spyware to my computer and made it run so slooooooow. When I contacted technical support, they said that they would be willing to remove the spyware for a "nominal fee" of about $100. After I heard the guy say that, I knew that I have to get new protection. So I decided that I would give bitdefender a try. In terms of features and the level of detection, it was FANTASTIC. However, the only problem is that bitdefender does not function with utorrent. That means that bitdefender is out of the question, since I frequently use utorrent to download files that I want. I was thinking about trying kaspersky next, but I also heard that avast was also pretty good. Which of those two would be better? One of my friends told me that he only uses zonealarm pro to protect his computer, but I wonder if that provides adequate protection against all of the threats that are currently out there. I don't mind if the program is a bit of a cpu hog, I just want something that's excellent at detecting threats. I am currently using windows xp home edition. My cpu is a pentium 4 2.2ghz with an fsb of 400mhz and I have 512mb of pc800rdram. Based on what I want to do, what would be the ideal protection for my pc? Kaspersky, avast, zonealarmpro, or something else? All input is greatly appreciated.

Out of curiosity, what was the problem with BitDefender and utorrent. I used to have both working fine on a XP Prof box.

Right now I am looking for an Anit-virus+Firewall solution too. I tried BitDefender but it doesn't let me run VMWare in a bridged network mode 🙁

I am going to try NOD32 and Kaspersky next. This is on a x64 Vista Home Premium.

The problem is that Bitdefender blocks the port that utorrent uses. Even the official utorrent website says that it is impossible to have both programs running at the same time and functioning properly. Also, if you use the registry cleaner, it will remove some of the registry entries for peer guardian. Here is the link to the utorrent page that talks about bitdefender.

Also, if you are using peer guardian 2, then you may want to steer clear of kaspersky. I already asked about that one on the pg2 forums and some of the moderators told me that it is not compatible with pg2.

I ust bought NOD32 and I'm pretty happy with it. It's fast and doesn't slow down my PC. And it works with Azureus- though I had to tinker with the settings to make it allow the torrenting.

well kaspersky is better than bitdefender and NOd 32 to for me. But i NOd 32 doesn't slow your computer down and havea good detection rate too.
It's true that it has a technical GUI but i don't think it will bother the user if u can spend sometime with it. overall it 's not bad as they say. But kaspershy has a suprior detection rate

GO FOR AVAST AV CAUSE TI IS VERY GOOD AND IT DETECTS THREATS BEFORE THEY GET INTO YOUR SYSTEM AND IT'S DATABASE IT SMALL IN SIZE(SOME TIMES 30KB)AND IT RUNS QUIETLY IN THE BACKGROUND.

I relied on the reviews assessing the effectiveness (no end-user will try all of the millions of existing viruses), but for performance and compatibility I have also been reading on forums to get a "real-world" picture.
Based on that I came to the conclusion that there's only one source if info for choosing the best AV for you: yourself! Everybody else is giving widely contradicting data.
So for my small company (5 ppl) I have been testing the top 3 AVs of 2008 in terms of effectiveness: BitDefender, Kaspersky and NOD32 (http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/).

Just for your info what my personal findings were (running WinXP on a Core2 Quad Intel 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM:
- NOD32 was abominable: on my 4-core Pentium with 2GB RAM, the mouse started to move erattically, Remote Desktop sessions to my server wouldn't let me in with other credentials than the local (I am the sys-admin and RDP to the servers with domain-admin credentials while my workstation is logged in as a "mere user"). So no go.
- BitDefender slowed my GMail to snale's pace: opening a simple email took 3sec to display in the browser after clicking (behaviour that only disappeared after fully uninstalling BD, disabling features had no effect). Another no go.
- Kaspersky has been running for 2 days now, and has sofar not interfered with my experience (RDP, GMail and eBay work fine and no noticable performance degradation (not even during the full system scan). I'm going to give it another few days, but I believe I have MY winner here.

My advice: give each a go for a week and see for yourself, you cannot rely on other ppl's experience, they run different software, doing things differently....

i have used nod32 it was just eh and it wasnt hard to use, i have used norton and mcafee (thumbs down for both), bit defender, panda internet security, avg(currently using) and i love it,
my security set up:
-AVG
-Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
-Spybot Search & Destroy
-Ad-Aware PRO

my pc is virus free and doesnt show signs of slowing down with these programs

I like mar10br0's advice.
I have run NOD32 on my PC with no problems like he had. I was even using RDP with no problems though I prefer Tight VNC for remote sessions. It depends on your use of your PC and everyone uses them different.
In my opinion, NOD32 ran 'fastest' on my PC (used the least resources) although I did find their download of updates to lag the PC a bit for some reason...
Also, NOD 32 has changed to a more 'user-friendly' GUI for novice users, though I am more techie and liked the old interface better (seemed more descriptive to me) But again that is users preference.

I highly recommend and have used:

Kapersky
AVAST

Try each to see how you like them.

ya imm using avast for 3 years without any problem. it has high detection rate than AVG professional. i doesnt slow my pc.

I have to vote for Avast. Ive been using it for years in many different configuations and never a problem.

When I repair othey peoples computer I put it on and they also love the speed increase over Norton and Mcafee.

One piece of advice on Norton though.
When you go to remove it be sure that you get the removal tool from Symantic.
It is the ONLY way to get rid of it and a borked uninstall without it will cause several problems.

Well i first tried Zone Alarm Internet Security Suit.It was very good in detecting threats and deleting it automatically.But after that from my Pendrive a Winlog.exe virus came and at that time i saw it failed to recognize that virus and did nothing to it as if it was not a virus.But it was coz my pc became very very slow. Then i gave a try to avast.But it is not too good to detect and clear the threats.Now for last 8 months i am using Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.Well till date i am getting a satisfactory result.. Well i am planning to give it a try next year by renewing the license 😀 😀 .

All AV applications nowadays have some flaws and no one can remove 100% of the malware. Moreover, all Internet security suites seem to have exactly the same features as this chart shows and it's virtually impossible to tell the difference between them. If you're saying that Norton missed a virus infection then I'm sure all other antivirus applications would miss them too.

Gotta say avast is great dude, thats what i tell my customers to use. Mcafee is not a good AV I would not recommend anyone use them. I think if you use avast and a free firewall, you will fine. According to pc world i believe that avast was recently rated # 1 free antivirus. I used to be an AVG fan, but I think Avast has them beat.
