avi,s no sound

can anyone tell me why avi file s i,ve downloaded have no sound when i put them on a usb stick and plug it to the tv picture is fine.
if i burn them to disc using xilisoft avi to dvd converter they play fine with sound.
some avis will play fine off stick

avi is just a container format and says nothing about the video and audio codec that is used. A TV typically only supports a limited number of audio and video codec, like divx, mp3 and so on. mp3 may even only be supported with some, but not al bit rates. A dvd burning software typically converts audio and video to standard video dvd formats.
