.avi woes

Ok, this is officially driving me insane.

I'll give you as much information as I can muster, but if you need more,
don't hesitate to ask me questions.

So - footage is recorded on my JVC DX95 digital camera. I've used this cam
to record extensive footage before, imported it to Windows MovieMaker (WMM),
edited it, saved it as DV-AVI, imported it into Ulead DVD Workshop 2 (WS2),
built menus and burnt a DVD. Great no problems.

It's been a while (too far to do System Restore) since I've recorded stuff
so various programs have come and gone. I import video to WMM, edit, save
as DV-AVI. Fine. Plays in Media Player. Import into WS2. Part way
through converting process, WS2 simply says 'Operation aborted'. After
trying a couple more times, I give it up as a corrupted file.

Some more time passes. I get footage from a different (Hi-8, I think)
camera. Download to WMM. Edit. Save as DV-AVI. 9 gig file. Import to
WS2. Same issue - 'Operation aborted' when it gets to 'Converting
audio...'.

avi plays in Media Player.

Tried re-compiling WMM project to a different physical hard drive on my
system to prove the .avi is reasonably stable. Same problem.

Tried using WinMPG Video Convert to convert avi to mpg. Crashes with
external exception.

GSpot states size as 738 MB
'Corrupt AVI header'.
Mulitpart OpenDML AVI.
'n.a.' against video codices.
No Audio Channels
It will render successfully - Video Src Type = dvsd. Audio Src = blank

The JVC camera, WMM and WS2 combination has worked fine in the past I
guarantee. You're all invited over to mine to watch a great holiday vid
from New York (yes indeedie, holiday vids - form an orderly queue!)

I need help.

Seriously.

D/L Virtuadub and try and process your raw footage with that instead of
Movie Maker and see if that will kick out a file you you use in DVD
Workshop.

Thanks RS.

Virtualdub says:- 'Type-1 DV file detected - VirtualDub cannot extract audio
from this type of interleaved stream.'

Tried using Ulead's DV Type-1 to Type-2 Converter. That fails after about 2
minutes with a 'Failed to save destination file' error.

The search continues...

1) There's a utility which can convert type-1 to type-2 files. Forgot
the
name. Do a search on doom9's forum.

2) AviSynth can open type-1 files (with avisource(.)), enabling you to
extract the audio.

Thanks Wilbert

I downloaded Ulead's DV Type-1 to Type-2 Converter. That fails after about
2 minutes with a 'Failed to save destination file' error.

Canopus version also fails.

Let me throw some more 'interesting' facts into the mix.

I already have the audio for this video as a separate stream. If I replace
audio in Workshop 2 with this separate stream, it burns ok - but by the end
of the 45 minute piece, it's about a second out!

Also, is this connected in any way with the fact that I can no longer open
AVIs direct from the web...I have to save them to the hard drive and then
they play fine. To qualify, I only get Save or Cancel as options when I
click on an AVI at a website.

The plot thickens...

The Save/Cancel could be due recent IE secruity upgrades.

Separate audio stream, ok thats good. About a one second drift, thats not so
good.

Audio drift is not a new problem however. Been reported in many apps before.

Assuming you have the camera and tape, perhaps you might save alot of hassle
and just use VirtualDub and recapture the footage.

Just as an odd question. You didn't D/L and install one of those big
pack-o-codecs did you? You didn't mention it, but it never hurts to ask the
odd question. I mean, heck, if your getting audio drift and avi type one
files that nobody elses software likes, then either you have something wonky
going on in MM or, your orginal capture just got one of those glitches.

A one second drift could be dealt with. Find some quiet spots to cut, bump
it out enough frames to re-sync. Prolly have to do that several times, but
its pretty quick. Cut and bump it out a few frames, lather, rinse, repeat.

Now, you might have hit on something here RS.

Firstly, I sadly don't have the original camera and tapes anymore, so that
looks like a dead end.

However, your questions about codecs is a good one. I did download a pack -
but now I'm going to come over all useless. I can't remember what or where.
I've looked through Add/Remove, but (no surprise) there's no mention of
codecs there.

Maybe, therefore, my question can change. Is there a program that lists
codecs with an uninstall option? Is there such a thing as a list of
standard codecs that XP Home comes with that I could uninstall back to?

The idea of the cut and bump sounds do-able...I will definitely hold that in
reserve.

Thanks for your time RS.

Jon K.

Heres the Mikeysoft site instructions.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=142731

A program called Dxman is free and lets you manage codecs
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/dxman.htm

What it dosent' do it tell you what codecs you really don't want to delete.
On that, your on you own. At this point it 'may' be a codec thats
interfering. Those big All Codec Packs you find about the internet sometimes
have stuff that can overwrite things that were doing perfectly fine.

Sound drift usually isn't a codec thing. Its a capture thing. I seem to
recall that Premire people had this problem a while ago, and some Final Cut
people reported it. There was a nice editor called Cinestream that, if you
used it with XP, would have a one second sound drift.

If I were you, I wouldn't even mess with it. Just do the slice and bump and
author. You could easily end up spending ten time the time trying to hammer
it back into shape otherwise.

Which either means:

1) you need to add a delay of 1 second or -1 second [can be done in VDub
itself].

2) you need to stretch it a bit [can be done in Besweet or in a audio
editing
program].

You can change that somewhere, but I forgot where. Perhaps someone else
remembers ...
