I can't take your money

By DAVE KIDD

MAURICIO TARICCO has earned a shock new reputation —as football’s
least-greedy player.

The tough-tackling Argentine defender tore up his £200,000 West Ham
contract after just 27 MINUTES of football, claiming he did not want to
take their money while lying on the treatment table.

Taricco, 31, joined the Hammers from Spurs last Friday but, less than half
an hour into his debut at Millwall on Sunday, he suffered a hamstring tear
which will keep him out for at least eight weeks.

The full-back, who earned a bad-boy image at White Hart Lane, insisted he
would not carry on picking up his £8,000-a-week wages if he could not play.

When he offered to terminate his six-month deal, West Ham agreed. Boss
Alan Pardew described the move as “one of the most honest acts” he has
ever experienced from a footballer.

Taricco is expected to go back to Argentina after a decade in England at
Ipswich and Spurs.

He said: “I came to West Ham to be of service to the club and I won’t be
able to contribute if I’m having treatment for two months.

“When I discovered the extent of the injury, I was very unhappy.

“I approached Alan Pardew and offered to cancel the contract, so the club
would not suffer a serious financial loss by paying a player who had only
played for them for less than half-an-hour.

“This will now give Alan the chance to spend the money on a fit player,
rather than on someone sitting in the treatment room.

“I am upset because, in my very short time here, I was impressed by the
friendly atmosphere.

“I’d like to wish them every success and hope they achieve promotion.”

At a time when footballers are portrayed as money-grabbing mercenaries,
Taricco has struck a blow for decency with his gesture.

He had become infamous for a series of battles with Chelsea’s Graeme Le
Saux during his time at Tottenham.

But Pardew said: “When Mauricio knew he was going to be out for so long,
he felt very uncomfortable.

“He didn’t have to make that offer, which shows his character and
personality off the pitch is far removed from the image portrayed.

“This is one of the most honest acts from a player I have experienced.”
