Awfully Confused With Intel Xeon X5550 Processor 2.66 GHz

It's an old processor, but it's not junk.

Anandtech's recent review of the just-released i7 6700k included a bunch of legacy benchmarks against older CPUs. The Xeon isn't there, but it's very similar to an i7 920 which is on the list. Benchmarks are here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review-6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/11

Does it come with a motherboard? Because you'll need a now very old 1366 mobo.

But if you're getting the CPU & mobo on the cheap, it would do for a casual/entry level gaming box. It's certainly not worth a lot of money though. Don't sink money into gear that old.

Hey Rhysiam thanks for the reply. It's on amazon for 27 bucks and I figured if it's that cheap, why not? But I wasn't sure what it would be compatible with (mobo etc..). Would it be safe to build a rig with an old mobo, the cpu, gtx 960 etc...? I went to part picker and couldn't even find a build with the Xeon x5550.

If you have to start scrounging for a second hand motherboards and CPU, I don't think it's a good option. If you get them together you can test them straight away and there's only one seller responsible if something doesn't work. With a separate CPU & mobo, you can't test one without the other and you won't know who to try and get a refund from if something doesn't work.

Have you literally just got the video card? What other components have you got? If you're happy to go second hand there's likely to be better options than starting out with a 6 year old CPU, even if it is just $27.

X5550 is based on the old LGA1366 platform.
Finding the mobo outside ebay could be also a challenge.
Theoretically, you can use any LGA1366 mobo. It is just, that you must really check the supported processor list first.
At that time, the Xeons were not yet common to be used for gaming rig or home systems, unlike todays e.g. E3-1231V3.
and...yeah...that Xeon is quite old and not really worth the money, especially for gaming rig, unless you can get the compatible parts really cheap from ebay.
