AsRock z97 Extreme4 Mobo just installed the onboard sound is awfully distorted I am updated to current drivers I don't think it's a hardware issue due to my friends being able to understand me on skype and have no issues with distortion or feedback. I was thinking an old Realtek HD audio driver could possibly be the fix, but I cannot find any.

Solution
Try unplugging the front panel connector to the motherboard and test the port to see if the issue still persists. This will eliminate the possibility of a short in the case wiring or front panel mini board.

Tried with different headphones and no it's not better. I would prefer not to have to exchange it, but i'll cross that path when we get there.

The sound from most motherboards these days is usually pretty good. I generally don't recommend getting a sound card until they try the on-board sound. Because they usually don't need it. But the options are few. A new set of speakers may improve the situation. The other choice is replacing the motherboard or a sound-card. A graphics card is another choice if you use the speakers from your monitor or sound system.

The distortion that you mention may be in the speaker connector, cable, or speaker.
It may also be a defective motherboard.

Is the issue the same using both the front AND the rear ports, or only on one of them? Try both front and rear outputs with two different speakers or headphones and see what the result is. It's also possible you might have hardware with different plugs than is intended to be used with the ports on that board. Some hardware, especially gaming headsets with combo plugs, need to be used with combo jack ports and won't work in normal ports.
