Hey, I going to make a build with a 3600 and 3060 to and I’m not sure which motherboard to get. People tell me to get the B550 but I’m not sure if I need it because I won’t have a gen4 SSD and by the time I upgrade my CPU I don’t think I’ll need b550. Could you please help me with deciding.

Edit: I know this is the motherboards section, but what RAM speed will be best?

I recommend everyone to consider a B550 board because its a newer chipset which is geared towards better supporting future components (RAM, Storage, Network, Peripherals).

Ryzen 5xxx is the last of the AM4 socket which means if you plan to hold on to your 3600 CPU for 2-3 years (and effectively skipping Ryzen 5xxx) then a B450 would suffice today. However, if the price difference between B450 and B550 boards is negligible, just opt for B550 simply because of better resale and/or brownie points if gifting.

RAM speed sweet spot for Ryzen is usually 3200MHz - 3600MHz. I'm using a 2700 CPU with 3200MHz CL 14 RAM.

Hello there!!
I'm from those people who would suggest you to get a B550 for a Ryzen system now 'IF POSSIBLE' no need to break the bank if that hurts I get it, I would get a B550 for longer support from the manufacturers for software and gen4 stuff ik many hardware don't even utilize gen 3 at max but just in future let's say 3 years later gen4 prices will be low and my pci lane won't be a bottleneck atleast for sake of my mind and B550 tomahawk last time I checked was $20 bucks more so if possible I would have bought it, but yes B450 is a good chipset with a well built Mobo .

GENERAL KENOBI

Perhaps a difference of 1-2 frames between PCIe 4.0 (B550) vs 3.0 (B450) in edge cases. Basically, none.
So far in game loading there is no noticeable difference even between PCIe 4.0 NVME and 6 Gbps SATA drive. However soon for folks who will have PCIe 4.0 drives things will change. Also B550 is more future proof in terms of BIOS upgrading and Zen3 compatibility.

Although ones who still have B450 and X470 with Zen2 CPUs, may live in peace until their hardware will age enough for upgrade.

btw, to save money, I'd recommend b450, since the pcie 4.0 in the b550 has no big difference YET, and thats why if your going for future proofing, go for b550, it'll prob last you 2-3 years until you have to upgrade your cpu again and possibly a new motherboard

That's exactly my issue. Right now I have an i5-4690k. It's impossible to upgrade without a new mobo.
Sadly people say that am4 is also on its last leg with zen3. So I won't throw too much money in an attempt to futurproof it. But at least I can then exchange a 3600 with a 5xxx and maybe get a little more milage
