If a board comes with a separate back plate...is it supposed to be for use...in say,...a desk top case? I never had a back plate included with any board I've purchased & my mid-tower already has the proper slots.

... what's the different between desktop case and tower case if you get the bundled back plate? If you change the plate, desktop and tower case will look the same (in case of back plate) unless you got yourself a compact desktop case.

You never know how stupid you are until you have done something stupid enough for you to realize it.

I think I might have found the answer in search option. If correct the back plate is replacement for cases that may not have the proper back plate line up for mobo ports. I tried search first but couldn't get page up. If this is correct...please disregard above question. If any additional info is important...it will be appreciated.

I confess....what I failed to mention was that the back plate that came with the board has those little metal parts that are cut to stick out against the individual ports holes of the case...i.e. mouse, keyboard, etc. Yet, the mobo already has one portion of metal sticking out from the metal around one of the usb ports. What I was really concerned about...was if it had something to do with grounding. Must again confess, I really never knew the answer as to why those metal parts of the back plates are sticking out.

d00d, ATX is ATX. An ATX desktop is simply a tower layed on it's side! If your case uses a standard backplate as most do, you can replace it with a standard replacement if needed. The little metal tabs are their to ground the connectors to the chassis.
