just put your files to D: so when you do a reformat files wont be deleted

For a "true" and secure backup, you should not use the same physical hard drive at all, because when that hard drive fails you've lost your backups as well.

Install a second hard drive or buy a couple of external one's so you can keep two backups of everything.
