Backing up Windows Vista on CDRW

Hello,
I have attempted several times to back up files from my laptop. I have Windows Vista.

Each time I insert a blank CDRW my computer formats the disc, then prompts me to insert a disc! It says there is no disc in the drive.

Am I doing something wrong? Why won't my computer write backup files to my CDRW?

Check in device manager for error code - also event viewer for errors.
