can't understand why they did not mention in todays article that the prohibition on amplfying weak sectors in the US, UK and Japan, can be circumvented by changing your region settings in control panel to another country. As the article was about making LEGAL backups per the fair use laws it seems they should have mentioned this

I was thinking the same thing.

Also, I thought the Plextor and CloneCD was a good combination. Pretty sure the Plextor can handle Safedisk 2.51.

I wonder what exactly is on Game Disc 3?

Thats the TAGE protected one .. personally I have not run across this protection ... yet .. as for what game it is I really can't tell but I bet someone will recognize it. As for the plextor ( and the lite-on in this article) I agree.. once AWS is turned on both can\should be able to copy the SD2 scheme disks with alacrity (had to use a 2 bit word lol)

Plextors do not make 1:1 copies of Safedisc 2.51 or later. The EFM encoding was changed after 2.5.

CloneCD has a list of was writers work at

http://elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/writers/a.html

Notice that the Asus and Liteon drives have two sheep symbols under "Correct EFM Encoding". Plextors have one. One means Safedisc 2.5 or less, 2 means it will also do Safedisc 2.51 or greater.

Just remember that you are *not* in the United States or UK before you install CloneCD.

Curious. I never checked that list but I'm sure I've read about people being able to make working backup copies of MOHAA (Safedisk 2.51) with their Plextor drives.

Are you sure about the meaning of the one symbol vs two symbols under the heading "Correct EFM-Encoding"? The notes just say one symbol means, "Drive writes regular bit patterns almost correctly".

Could it mean that copies work some of the time?

The reason I ask is with my Cyberdrive CW068D (36x12x48) I have made a working backup copy of MOHAA. However, I was only able to make a copy on CDRW media. It refuses to work with CDR media. I've tested my backup by installing the game using only the backup. The game plays fine with the copy while my original stays safe on a spindle with my other originals.

My drive isn't even on the CloneCD list but I was just wondering if my example above could be one meaning for table entry for the Plextor.

I remember an old article written by the author of CloneCD I read that applied at least to earlier Safedisc protections. Basically it said that Plextor can write them correctly but can only be re-read by the same drive correctly. But also note that it says Phillips drives are unaffected, while the list now only gives it one icon.

If youd really like to know I can test it at my grandpas house (he has one of the 40X drives, and a 24X) this weekend. Id test it on my 16X but its not listed as doing any of the EFM encoding correctly.

Previously mentioned article:

I successfully made a back-up of MOH:AA using my Plextor, but I used Blindwrite instead of CloneCD. It works successfully with my Pioneer DVD and Toshiba CD-ROM.

Don't put yourself out. I was just curious.

At your second link I found reference to a useful CD forum site, http://club.cdfreaks.com. They have a CloneCD forum and an CloneCD Exerienced Users forum. In the latter, someone answered the question about the meaning of "Does not do EFM recording perfectly". The answer was that drives so indicated CAN MAKE PERFECT COPIES. To do this Amplify Weak Sectors must be activated (i.e. the Region trick). I gather from this that AWS is not necessary for drives that can do EFM do perfectly, unless I misunderstood.

This whole thing is such bullshit. Everyone thinks that anyone who copy's a CD is a pirate.

I've lost over 5 discs to damage. If a CD accidently falls out of my hand, hits the floor, then I pick it up and see a scratch on the back, that could be a $70 game.

In america, it is your LEGAL RITE/RIGHT to own one backup copy of any disc.

Bethesda made Morrowind copy proof it seems. If I get a defect, and they don't pay in full (including the shipping and handling) for the replacement, I am going to sue the shît out of them for taking my right to make a backup.

If you want to stop piracy, best thing to do is use CD-keys and force online registration (without the sneaky stealing info tactics that microsoft use - won.net/Valve issues you a user ID from your CD-key any time you log on to play any Half Life game online).

It is very irritating that we all have to suffer because greedy, selfish, boastful, arseholes don't want to pay for the products they love so much even though they have the money.

What the article could of mentioned is that recent Plextor firmware has been crippled so it doesn't copy Safedisc.
