Backup Software Recommendation

I am looking for the holy grail of a free or near free backup software that can back up files in the "clear" what I mean by this is that it doesn't use a proprietary file system so that the files are unreadable unless the program is used. I would want to be able to plug the external drive into any PC and read the files immediately.

I have tried using the built in backup in WIN 7 but it does not do what I am asking.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There are none that I know of. Not to mention most backup software uses some form of compression so it would at least need software to decompress the data.

Have you thought about simply copy/pasting the files over to an external drive? Or is this something that you want done automatically? If the external drive is large enough and the files aren't in too many places this might be an option for you. Other then that I do not know of any free software that will do everything.
