Two extra icons (look like the icon of a file with no extension) appear in my
control panel.
1. I can NOT open them
2. I can create shortcuts for them
3. There is not tip showing up when I put mouse pointer over the icon
4. They have NO names

How do I get ride of them??
My system is Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1

Thanks!

Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a scan on your
system. Check for any malware on your system, download, install and run Ad
Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com.

If your system is clear of viruses and malware, try using System Restore to
take your system back to a time before this began, Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

Hi Mike, I did virus scan, ad-aware scan, and tried system restore; but the
problem persists. Thank you anyway!

Thank you David, but all of them have names. I can recognize they are all
valid control panel icons.

Martin,

Export the branch and post the content here (attachment)

Also check the alternate path in HKEY_CURRENT_USER area. (does not exist by default)

The REG export looks OK, except this entry (missing in my system)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{640167b4-59b0-47a6-b335-a6b3c0695aea}]

Next option is to look for suspicious *.CPL files in Windows\System32 folder.

Thanks David.

Saw the final test? A low scoring game overall.

The REG export looks OK, except this entry (missing in my system)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{640167b4-59b0-47a6-b335-a6b3c0695aea}]
@="Portable Media Devices"

Next option is to look for suspicious *.CPL files in Windows\System32 folder.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace] in my registry.

Here is the dump of
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace]
