Bad motherboard or Cpu?

My computer shut down while playing the battle field 4 beta and it wont turn on. I unplugged everything tested the power supply (with paperclip) and it worked fine but when I plugged it into the 8-pin slot on the motherboard nothing works. So did my motherboard or cpu maybe die on me?

Everything works when the 8-pin is not plugged in but when i plug it in nothing powers on. I have the right cords plug in there as well. I'm just a little confused on what it is.

Does the board have onboard graphics? Can you borrow a power supply and test, as the paperclip test is not relevant?
Can you test with different graphics card?

No onboard graphics and unfortunately i dont know anyone i can borrow psu from and I only have MSI Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB Video Card.

It is ntec Basiq Plus 550W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V Power Supply

If starting the board with only CPU and CPU fan instlled, 24 and 8 pin cables connected, is the CPU fan spinning?

No the only thing that happens is the 4 led lights on the board light up and turn off (like 1 second)

It looks like a power supply issue, but it might be the board too.
Hard to say without swapping parts.
Maybe RMA-ing them both?
