I have an MSI R9 390X an I7 4790K and 16gb 1333MHz of RAM. Sometimes in cities i reach 25 fps, and i saw a few benchmarks of the 390X and of the 390 that performed much much better, on the 390 the lowest was (34fps). Is it beacuse of the distance settings? I already downloaded the new AMD drivers.

Solution

because of gameworks it sets tessellation to useless levels

go into the catalyst control center, override tessellation to 4x

unlock the fps limit in the ini files like it says in that link

use the catalyst control center to limit the fps to 60

set godrays to medium

enjoy locked 60 fps smooth as a baby's bottom

Interesting... I've had no issues at full-ultra 2550 on a i5-4670k/GTX970 system (not overclocked)... we were actually discussing yesterday how impressive it was that we could spawn a ton of raiders and the system was still silky smooth. I've not tracked frame rate but I've never noticed any choppiness (I'm guessing that means something >30fps at all times).

Part of the problem is sometimes you see a 30FPS lock leftover in the ini file. Make sure you've patched/updated and look into turning the FPS cap off in the game ini files.

Also Fallout 4 is an NVidia gameworks title. Sometimes even turning off features in the game settings doesn't work and they are still on in the background. You may need to use a beta patch or manually edit some ini files (back them up first). Also make sure Controller support and vibration are OFF as this caused regular stuttering on my PC as it polled USB for a controller even though I had none.

I used a mod to smartly manage shadows... Shadows seem to be the problem for me and a lot of people. I also reduced godrays and distance (a little bit). I'm still getting drops in a few areas but not as bad as it was, it's much better. I'm going to try your solution maxalge and see how it goes... but i didn't see a big performance increase by reducing godrays. It's late now, tomorrow i'll get back to you.

It's a bit better with your solution combined with the shadow performance. Still see drops in a few areas, nothing dramatic. Anyway thanks guys.
