Bad Performance on new video card

Today i purchased a new Gigabyte R9 270 to replace the very much outdated 8800 GTX, I installed the card, downloaded all the latest drivers, removed all the NVIDIA drivers and then opened a game, when i got into the game, i found the frame rate of the 270 to be the same as the 8800 (around 30 frames when the 270 should be averaging at least 120), Any ideas on what the problem could be?
