Bad RAID 1 performance

I have two 2TB 7200rpm hdds in a RAID 1 set-up using the built in Intel RAID. I've been using this set-up for a long time and haven't noticed my drives' speed until now. When installing updates or new games on Steam, the disk speed is between 15MB/s - 20MB/s. My laptop with a 5400rpm drive usually achieves much higher speeds when installing anything on Steam.
I remember running benchmark's a while back and I believe the speeds would hang around 100 then slowly drop down and eventually reach 50. I'm trying to remember this off the top of my head, don't take this as fact.
Is this normal? If it isn't, is there anyway I can fix this?

Yes 15~20Mb on RAID1 is SLOW, Some Mobo has better raid engine, other does not... It it's a BOOT drive, then pretty much you stuck.
Unless you want to reload the OS, then use one of these

The BEST RAID1 controller are
https://www.amazon.com/SATA-Dual-Controller-Direct-Attached/dp/B00UXSSZ1U/
or
http://www.datoptic.com/ec/retain-data-raid-mirror-dual-sata-iii-6gb-s-raid-controller-direct-attached-driver-less-html.html

These are driversless RAID just simple plug to Mobo's SATA Host then you are set.. Use it likes a single HDD
