Trying to fix a friends laptop and when i turn it on just after the bios the screen goes black, can still tell the screen is getting power and is on, but i get nothing after that. No cursor. I tried a few things like using a windows repair CD to repair the start up, nothing. Tried rolling back on restore point, nothing. Sort of at a lost, anything help and ideas would be great.

thanks for your time

What make/model laptop?

Does it show the windows repair options? did you try safe mode?
boot from installer, on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
hit the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
Pc will restart and load safe mode

is there anything on C drive you want to rescue? try making this on another PC: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/ - this will also tell us if its windows or hardware at fauilt, if ubuntu loads and works.

if you can copy everything off laptop he can't afford to lose, can try a reset
boot from installer, on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install
choose troubleshoot
choose reset this PC
Can choose to keep files (everything in the library folders so documents, pictures, music, video) and Settings (logins generally), or Wipe it all (resets win 10 to like it was 1st installed)
either choice, PC will restart and reinstall win 10

If reset doesn't work either, do a fresh install
follow this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

when you reach the screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install and reactivate once finished

On the screen where you choose where to install win 10, if it gives you an error about GPT drives, delete all the partitions on the hdd and press next. If it still gives error, cancel out of the installer and restart PC and start installer again, it will accept next on that screen this time (some PC just need a restart here)

What happens is, the normal bios/hp screen shows, so i can get into the bios but after that i get blinking cursor that blinks 2 times in the upper left corner or the screen ( cursor not pointer ). and then nothing a blank/black screen. Can tell the screen is on and power to it.

I have tried the windows repair option a couple of time using CD/DVD, as i can not use the internal one due to not be able to get into safe mode or anything and with the CD/DVD there is no option to boot into safe mode, not sure why.

I have tried rolling back to restore point, nothing.

I even thought something might be wrong with the MBR

In the end if i have to i can take out the HDD and hook it up to my pc and save his files from there to my pc but i would really like to solve this and least understand whats going with it.

Thanks for the reply

See if your hunch is right

boot from installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose command prompt
We need to use the Bootrec.exe tool. Click on command prompt and type in the following commands, one after the other:
bootrec /RebuildBcd
bootrec /fixMbr
bootrec /fixboot
Exit

Now go ahead and reboot your system. In some cases you may need to run some additional commands.
bootsect /nt60 SYS or bootsect /nt60 ALL

its a fair guess, the cursor at top could also just be the fact its set up to boot off CD and waits a few seconds for you to hit enter... mine does that on a restart.

After a few attempts, i thought to just leave it on and see what happens. After about 2 hours i got the window 10 logo to show up and another 30 mins after that i saw the logon screen, and even more waiting the desktop showed up but of course everything is moving super slow. Did a few virus scans and nothing seems to fix the slowing machine. Then looked at the task manager and saw that disk usage is at 100%. Well did a few things like going in the services and disabling super fetch and windows search. Still at 100%. What i find strange is, this laptop lags and shows signs of being really slow just after the bios screen, most of the time the slowing starts right after one would long on or get to the desktop not at the start. Least thats a first for me. Now i have to find whats causing this 100% disk usage and do a trial and error or ideas lol. Any suggestion. I feel i have fixed a computer like this before and i remember it not being a easy fix as most ideas to fix this. Just have to try and hope, what sucks is every click of anything takes 10 or more mins to register and happen.

Hi Autobot2000, I have exactly the same issues you encountered with my desktop pc. BTW have you found the solution? After reading your last posting, I will try leaving my pc ON thru the night to see if it can boot to windows desktop.

On another suggestion given to, I tested the hard drive for errors. Sadly all the test i did for it came back bad. The drive was slowly going. I had to save all the files i could for my friend and buy a new hard drive and just transfer the files over.

@Autobot2000, hi thanks for the reply. I have tested my drive earlier, no error was detected. Will try leaving my pc ON thru the night to see if it can boot to windows desktop. Thanks again.

Hi guys, my problem turns out to be a bad graphics card (Boot into safe mode but can see brown columns, Try update GPU driver the screen turns Green. Lol... Thanks & bye...
