Anyone know if it's possible to prevent that annoying balloon from
popping up telling you which wireless network you are connected to when
using the Windows wireless configuration?

I've been combing the web looking for this same answer this last week.

Doesn't have that anymore. That may have been pre-SP2. Now it says
"notify me when this connection is limited or no connectivity".

The only way to get rid of it is to disable showing the icon in the
systray, but I'd rather keep the icon...

Lars,

This works in SP1, not sure about SP2. HTH

Sorry 'bout that. It works on my Gateway Essential 866. I'll Google some
more and see what I can come up with.

Download the TweakUI tool from:
b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe>

Click on Taskbar in the lefthand pane, and uncheck 'Enable balloon
tips' on the right.

Hope this helps

I have a distinct feeling that'll do just about the same as the registry
hack mentioned before. It'll disable all the balloons, not just the ones
specific to the wireless service.

Didn't realize it before, but X-Setup (www.xteq.com) by Xteq Systems has a
way to disable XP's "balloon tips". Again, this works on my particular PC.
YMMV

If you decide to D/L and install, after starting the program, choose
"Classic" mode. Entry is under "Appearance", "Interface", "Tool
Tips/Balloon Tips", "Windows XP Balloon Tips". Uncheck the box on top
right. Restart your PC. HTH

Taking a moment's reflection, Richard Perkin mused:

You know, I knew TweakUI had that setting, but I couldn't find it. Your
description of clicking on the left pane menu jogged my memory ... for some
reason, on this laptop, TweakUI installs the older version. The one with
the tabs clustered on the top. I have downloaded it from MS, and from
another site. The other site had a screen shot showing the correct
interface ... but that's not what I get.

On my main XP install box, I have TweakUI in the Administrator Tools,
and it looks right. On this laptop, it is in the main Control Panels group,
and looks like the old TweakUI. The difference was it was installed on my
main box *before* SP2, and *after* SP2 on the laptop. Perhaps the installer
has a bad OS version verification.

But, Lars, you are correct. This setting in TweakUI disabled *all*
balloons.

Didn't work for my Dell Latitude D600 laptop (WinXPsp1) either. I
thought I saw something about those 'popups' in the Windows Taskbar(?)
configuration, but I can't find it any more...
