Balmora Council problem

Larrius Varro at the Moonmoth Leagion asked me furtively to get info and get
rid of 5 undesirable characters that I found out were in the Balmora Council
club. I got their names form Sugar (what-cha-ma-call her)at the thieves
guild hangout.

I go to the Council club and taunt one of them until i get a successful
taunt, end the conversation and then kill all five.

Upon exiting I am not given any options by the guards except to die. Am I
doing something wrong?

I stole something one time and got three options: to give up and go to jail,
pay a fine, or resist arrest and probably get killed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PS, this is the first time I used the Taunt and Intimidate options in
Morrowind, is the above description of how I employed it correct?

Avoid guards and soldiers until you get back to Varro, who, as I remember,
fixes things up for you.

You have to taunt the others separately. If you just kill them
unprovoked, its murder. Get them to attack you. The three on the main
level will all attack you at once if any one of them is taunted
successfully, but the gal in the basement and the guy upstairs have to
be taunted seperately.

You don't have to kill the bartender at all.

Sounds to me like you only successfully taunted one of them once, not
continually until he/she attacked you, which is the idea. It doesn't matter
how much you successfully taunt someone ( one time or a hundred ), if you
don't get them to attack you first, it's still considered murder when you
kill them. Although apparently ( as per Terry's post ) Larrius will clear
your record if you can avoid the guards long enough to get back and talk to
him.

If after taunting one of them, their disposition reaches zero without
them attacking you, each time bribe them with 1,000 gold to raise their
disposition until you successfully taunt them into attacking your
character (you'll get your money back when you kill them).

Thanks everyone, I finally managed to taunt and get the group of three in
the bar, then the one in the basement and the one at the door to attack me.
It took me about 40 minutes of clicking "Taunt" and a sore clicking finger.
My speechcraft went from 7 to 9, which is probably the reason it took so
long.

Thank you all for your help

My solution to the same thing (did the guest today. I'm a weakling
healer/archers type. lvl8 with no armor/weapons skills but marksman at
lvl40. unarmored at 20):

Enter Counsil Club, Bound Longbow, Cast Averted Eyes (10sec invis) and
stalk. when I get hide I blast the Smith guy. He takes 2 more arrows
after the first. Then I steadily keep shooting at everyone in my
presence and quaffing healing potions (has a stack of 20 when i
entered). After that I go out and ran to the river and managed to jump
in *just* in time before a Hlaalu Guard catched me. I creeped to the
Fort. I came near the gate from behind a small hill along the road
towards Arkehenfa...the dwemer ruin. Cast Averted Eyes and run in
through the gates and to the left behind a tree. Cast again and run to
the door. Varro fixed me up nicely.

I tried a different aproach earlier by using an amulet of divine
intervention i ended at the fort door. got caught every time and all the
guards wanted was my life. Even if I ran inside and cleared the thing up
with Varro all the guards that had already attacked me still came after
me. Next try. Sneak closer to the Fort and Snipe the Guards from afar. I
know it's evil, but hey. Varro's gonna fix me right. wrong. after the
guards respawned they attacked me again. So thats when I tried the
invisibility/sneak thing and worked like a charm. :)

There's one more way that I tried with another char. Get in thieves
guild and wait until you get the Security Expert quest. find the expert
but dont report back in to SugarLips. Clear Council Club and run to
SugarLips and report back on the Security Expert. He'll clear all
bounties as a reward. But then again if you can get your hands on some
invis potions or can cast the spell you should use varro and save
SugarLips' for something else.

You don't have to do anything to raise their disposition back up. Don't waste
your money. :)

Is there any other way to get them to attack you? They just laugh at me when
I try to taunt

There is a spell called Frenzy Humanoid which acts to make
NPCs attack you. Curiously, guards do not consider casting
this spell to be an offensive move; meaning they will not
try to arrest you if you cast it in order to start a fight. ;-)

When using speechcraft, alternate bribing and taunting so that their
disposition stays betwenen 50 and 80 or so; taunting is most effective
if they like you.

Otherwise, set a Mark at the guy (Lazarus?) at FT Moonmoth so that
you get immediately ask him to straighten things out.

Problem is I have already invested over 8000gp and still can't taunt any of
them. If I kill them unprovoked I get a bounty of over 5000!

I usually just kill 'em, divine intervention to moonmoth, try to get
in door before guard gets ahold of you, and get boss-man to fix it for
you.

You need high speechcraft to taunt successfully with ease. Otherwise
you need lots of patience as you repeatedly taunt for a long time.

I move the little windows around until I can taunt repeatedly with a
couple of clicks, then I just click away while I sip coffee, or beer, or
whatever.

Keep trying it over and over again. Resize/relocate the windows so
that you can click rapidly without moving the mouse between
"persuasion" and "taunt". After 1 to 3 minutes, you'll get results.
Might also get a speechcraft level-up 😀

I'm laughing at some of the suggestions. Taunting is still the best way to
go. First take out the smith upstairs, then the thief downstairs. Oh, and
raise that damn Speachcraft AND Personality to something above fifty before
you even think of trying. Yeah, it means you'll have to leave them be for a
while, but it's not like you're on a schedule here.

1. Raise Speechcraft to above 50
2. Raise Personality to above fifty
3. Taunt the smith on the top floor
4. Taunt the thief at the bottom level
5. Taunt the Savant and run upstairs to the door so you can slip in and out
during the fight to recover from injuries and the like.

Do this, and you'll never get a bounty on your head. I didn't.
