Any contributions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Joe :)

ive been asking the same question aswell,
heres what i got, either a gtx560ti(non-reference) or (HD 78** Series).
P.s these are as long as its not a hugh resolution you going for. Even at this you wont get BF3 on Ultra

better with a GTX 560Ti by the look of it, you can get a 448 core for £185 from ebuyer i think or a EVGA GTX 560Ti '448' Classified edition from overclockers for £211

Thanks, a friend told me that the 7850 is good, is there much difference between the two? he mentioned something about more memory in one :S. I'm a bit of a noob at this kinda stuff

Thanks. Heard a lot of good things about Sapphire I can get their OC version for £189.00. Do they OC it to the max or can I OC even further?

Likewise lol, from the benchmarks ive found of the GTX 560Ti vs HD 7850 they vary depending on what resolution you have them in like for BF3 on ultra with 1920x1080 the HD 7850 gets 54fps but the GTX 560Ti gets 48fps...to be honest thats BS i have the EVGA 560Ti Superclocked DS edition and i used to get around 55-68 fps depending on the location and firefights but it only went under 45 when i was using fraps.

Heres the benchmark list

Either the 7850 or wait for the Nvidia mid range 600s GPU. Chance are that 7850 will either drop in price and/or perform slower then then Nvidia.

I could stretch for the 7870 but I'm struggling on how much difference there will be in performance for an extra £70 here in the UK. That's my main concern. I would look to possibly CF 2 7850's in the future.

Forgive me for being a noob but what is non-reference? Does that mean the SC, SCC and FTW editions? If so does that mean its a waste of the extra money to get these card when you could do the overclocking yourself?

So with the 7870 I noticed that it gets 23 FPS on say Metro on Ultra settings but this is with 2560X900 display will it run with more FPS on 1920X1020?

BF3 on ULTRA, 1920 x 1080 with reasonable FPS (50-60 average)

you will need a good cpu, and bare minimum of 7950 or GTX 580, but preferable 7970 or even GTX 680

I know this because it wouldn't come close to running on ultra on my 6950, and now with my GTX 590 I average 70 FPS.

It's one of the most demanding games to date.

Hey, thanks. However I was looking on Youtube and I found this video if you go to 1.04 it shows him playing BF 3 on Ultra with 1920X1020. It runs fine he gets around 45-50 FPS he does have an i7 2600k but i'm getting an i5 2500k surely it will run on ultra with a 7870?

Do you think you might of overlooked the 78** series? Or am I missing something here?

Thanks

Joe :)

non reference bascially means that a card (eg. Nvidia Gtx560Ti) is taken and Overclocked/tweaked by different companys to make it better, they then stick there brand label on it, (eg. ASUS Gtx560ti DirectCuii), thats basically ASUS beefing up that card and rebranding it. hope this helps.

Interesting video, and good to see his card works well for him.

One to thing to consider with that video, is he is playing in Team Deathmatch mode. That makes the maps between 75-90% smaller than usual (conquest mode). I get much better frames when playing Team Deathmatch, perhaps because some of the load is taken off the processor. If he were playing a larger map FPS might drop a lot.

Another thing to consider, it's risky to depend on overclocking your card. Sometimes cards don't overclock well, and can even reduce performance when overclocked, if per say, AMD's power throttling kicked in and caused stutters. (I had this problem when OCing my last 6950) anyways, you shouldn't expect to get the same OC results this guy has. Plus if you do, you'll lose peace of mind worrying about the card's temperature.

My personal policy is to never depend on OC for getting the performance I want.

I just found this too, here are some benchmarks for BF3
http://www.anandtech.com/Show/Index/5625?cPage=15&all=False&sort=0&page=11&slug=amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands

The 7850 averages 32.1 on Ultra 1920 X 1080. 30-40 FPS is unplayable IMO.

XFX has a new oced 7850 that is based on the 7870 pcb and has the same cooler as the 7870. I really like the cooler they use and the card looks very nice. Theres a reveiw on fuzilla .

I have the power color 7870pcs+ and have had 0 issues with it. I got it the day 12.3 ccc came out. Mine runs around 40c at higher over clock than what it was originally set at while gaming. Idles at 38c and its 88 degrees in my house right now in the desert in arizona.
It was 96 in the house the other day card was running around 42c while playing rift in a raid
