Hi,

My sister was using her laptop last night and it ended up acting weird (it shut down when she was on the internet and she tried to switch it back on but it would start up for like 15 seconds then shut down again.) When it finally switched on longer than 15 seconds, it asked her for a system restore. She tried to do it but it would not allow her. She clicked cancel or something and it went to her desktop page.

She asked me to do a full system scan using Avast but somehow the license has expired. I tried to put in a new license key but the key did not fit the boxes avaliable (it was too long :??:). So I removed Avast from the laptop and was planning on downloading the newer version to the computer.

I downloaded it but Avast won't allow me any further in the installation as it says the Base Filtering Engine is not running. I looked on services and the BFE is not there. I used this blog to help me (http://www.hageltech.com/blog/2012/02/07/base-filtering-engine-problems.html) but when I right-click in the Reg Editor, it doesn't have permissions.

I suspect that there is a virus on the computer as the anti-virus stopped, Chrome is removed and the internet now needs a Network Security Key to connect even though she's been using it for a while.

Can someone help me? I don't really know much about computers so I might be a bit slow :wahoo:. Her laptop is a HP G61-110SA and has had it for a couple of years now.

I don't know if it is a virus, it could be. I don't know winthruster so I can't say anything about it. It sounds like you are trying to make changes on a computer but you don't have the administrator rights to do so. Log in as administrator and try to reinstall the antivirus.

How do I unplug the harddrive? Do you think it's definitely a virus that's on the laptop?
When I was waiting for an answer, I downloaded WinThruster and it found some errors. Will WinThruster help this situation? :??:
