Basic guide to OC'ing

Hello,
sorry if this is a boring question but I'm a bit lost and could do with doing some reading on it.

I have done some research but have not yet found a decent, consistent and relatively basic guide to the what, why and hows of overclocking.

I'm not stupid generally in life (I'm almost a doctor lol) and have had PC's for 15 years and upgraded them etc and feel that all I need is a guide that has everything in one place.

I'm not looking for a step by step how-to guide for a particular system just something that explains things generally, I'll worry about my system later.

Sorry for the rambly post, your help will be greatly appreciated!
