Pardon my ignorance, but do the 802.11b wireless devices and bluetooth
devices work in Europe? Are there hotspots in hotels, bookstores, cafes,
etc in Europe as there are in North America?

I am taking a trip to Northern Italy and Paris in 2 weeks and wonder if a
handheld PC that has both 802.11b and bluetooth will work at various spots
around venice, milan, and Paris. i.e., can I hook into the 'net and pick up
my email???

Thanks for your help.

Yes they do, BUT be aware that there are two differences. Firstly your
card is probably limited to channels 1-11, in Europe (most of it) we use
channels 1-13. Secondly if you have a high power card (>100mW) it
is not legal to use >100mW here.

Apart from these it should work.
